Specter wants Gonzales gone
Source: Washington Time

Sen. Arlen Specter, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said this morning that Congress needs to "find a way to end the tenure of Attorney General Gonzales."

Mr. Specter made his statement at the beginning of a hearing with J. Scott Jennings, deputy White House political director.

The Pennsylvania Republican said that Democrats in Congress need to work with the White House to end the investigation into the firing of eight U.S. Attorneys last year, "so that we are not distracted by these issues."

"We just have to find a way to work it out, Mr. Chairman," Mr. Specter told Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, Vermont Democrat.

3. So, in other words ...
... what Specter has learned about the attorney firings is so terribly awful that merely getting rid of Gonzales is chicken-feed by comparison, if that's what it will take to get those liberals to just shut up.

No deal.

Oh yeah, it wasn't perjury either.

What a bunch of shit. Specter is the best liar in the Senate (after Lieberman).

7. Well, let's hope he sticks with that! His reputation for cowering is
quite memorable. However, I said yesterday that since Gonzo stuck his finger directly in Arlan's eye by never responding to his demand for a written explanation of his testimony, this time COULD be different!

8. Omigod! Do you realize what this means?
Spectre has figured out what the Bushies are hiding, and what may come out if the Gonzo hunt continues. He's hoping that if Gonzo's head rolls, the rest of the investigation will be shut down. He doesn't want all the Repug dirt, the stories of shut-down investigations into people like Duke Cunningham, and the electoral corruption, to see the light of day.

THIS IS NO TIME TO QUIT! ARLEN'S SQUEALING LIKE A PROVERBIAL STUCK PIG! Go, Go, Go!

I was appalled by Specter line of questioning (I always think for some

reason he will get a moral conscious---that is another story). He started out
by asking if he talked to his parents about this situation, his wife, asked he he was upset,
were these hearings distracting to his work? (Jennings said yes, very time consuming).
Then Specter asked how worried was he--legally and made a comment that Jennings had
appeared in his office yesterday with THREE lawyers.
Specter ended up by saying lots of wasted hours and distraction last several months!!
So, in the end, specter has caved once again!!

14. Yeah, bullshit. Specter ain't gonna do SHIT.
He is a fake moderate. All bark and no bite. This whiny piece of shit will just go to the White House for his cookie, get a pat on the head for being a good little fake self-appointed leader of those that oppose Gonzalez, then capitulate and head home with nothing to show for it as was intended the whole time.

Repukes love to appoint their own proxy representative of the opposition. They do it all the time. McCain and Snowe are also in Congress apparently to do little else. They get the call that they can speak up a little, to appease their purple districts and to claim the role of the leader of dissent on the issue. Then Specter or the other token gets invited to 'negotiate', a bullshit, one sided agreement comes out, and Bushco has effectively neutered another crisis or issue again.

Dems fall for it nearly every time. They never say "so and so DOESN'T speak for us". Effective.

17. Not much I can add to that
The Arlen Specter School of Political Grandstanding has a number of graduates infesting the Senate (you mentioned McCain and Snowe, but Gordon Smith of Oregon has at least a magna and probably a summa cum laude degree), but the Old Master comes out from time to time to show the young stuff how it's done. Specter will bloviate and bluster, but when it comes time to do something, he'll suddenly remember that Gonzales wasn't all bad, he has a lot of friends who think he's a nice guy, and his hair is so full and thick. How can we throw someone like that out of government, just because he's an incompetent, evil, lying wad of weasel snot?

16. So mr. Magic bullet believes that the best thing would be to end the investigation
so that we are not distracted by these issues.
Does he mean the illegal use to the DOJ to influence elections?
OR
Does he mean the illegal war of aggression to illegally occupy Iraq for the benefit of BIG OIL?
OR
Does he mean the investigation into how the WH ordered Tillman to be hit so he could not come out against the illegal occupation?
OR
...
The GOP just wants to end ALL investigations

TOO FUCKING BAD. WE have to INVESTIGATE IMPEACH INDICT and IMPRISON.

It's the votes that count, not wishy washy statements on Meet the Press.

Remember Arlen's "not proven" vote in the Clinton impeachment trial?

So if Gonzales is removed or resigns, Congress backs off entirely? That the people of the United States NEGOTIATE with an Administration more deeply and pervasively criminal than the Nixonian era? I don't think so!

is that with Bush running things, he will never get charged with anything so we mine as well just let him resign then prosecute him when there are people in office who obey the law. Frankly, the guy is such an idiot I don't know why he has come this far.

Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 08:49 PM by chill_wind
Pelosi, Congress too busy with the real work of the people for a burden like this, ya know? (or something like that).

:sarcasm:

Different motives. Similar language. Same desires: "Make it GO AWAY."

re: Inslee's resolution....

(...)
"Of course it's merited," Pelosi said. "I've called for the resignation of the attorney general. But right now, we're focusing on health care for America's children, a strong energy bill for energy independence, lobby reform. ... If that's something he wants to introduce, I think there are certainly grounds."

But Pelosi fell short of committing to move the resolution through the House.

"We'll see. I mean, I would hope that the president would see the light, accept the resignation of the attorney general so that we don't have to spend people's time on something that is so self-evident," she said.

In any case, House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) said he did not expect any such resolution to be considered before the August recess. And he said he would like committee review of the resolution before taking a public position on it.
