Giuliani: Dems want nanny government
Source: Associated Press

MEREDITH, N.H. - Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani on Monday accused Democrats of favoring a controlling "nanny government" as he continued his bashing of the rival party.

The former New York mayor, opening a two-day campaign trip in the first primary state, also claimed that Democrats would raise taxes between 20 percent to 30 percent. He offered no specifics to back up those figures.

"Democrats are kind of falling over each other seeing who can raise taxes faster," Giuliani said. "It looks like they're going to raise taxes anywhere between 20 to 30 percent. John Edwards just said he's going to raise the capital gains tax double that. Last time we did that, we lost 40 percent in revenue. The last time we did what John Edwards is discussing, the United States lost revenue by basically discouraging people from making investments."

Edwards has proposed raising capital gains taxes for the wealthy while creating tax breaks for the middle class.

At a later appearance in Wolfeboro — where rival Mitt Romney has a lakefront summer home — Giuliani said the solution lies in lower taxes.

"We should love this problem of taxes being too high by lowering taxes," he said, standing on the steps of an ice cream shop.

Last week, Giuliani called the Democrats the "party of losers" and singled out Edwards and Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for criticism on economics and foreign policy.

Giuliani argued that he favors less government and lower taxes.

"That's what makes America great, not this nanny government that Democrats want to give us, where government controls your entire life," he said.

Good observation!

I've often wondered how I would respond to a charge of "nanny government" from a freeper. Now with 7 years of BushII behind us, I can honestly say:

We tried it your way...it didn't work!

Succinct and to the point...

11. Hey Tudy, a 'nanny' government to me means one that tries to tell you how to act, think, and
speak. It tells you what you're allowed to see and holds back information from citizens because it believes we are too stupid to understand complex ideas. It's a 'nanny' government that we have now, telling us we can't decide our reproductive freedom, can't live our lives without being 'afraid', can't make our own decisions about getting cheaper drugs from Canada, etc.

22. GOPers want looters government
Translation time:

"GOPers are falling over each other seeing who can loot the public treasury faster," donkeyotay said. "It looks like they're going to loot anywhere between 2000 to 3000 percent of GDP. They're going to raise the debt on our children and grandchildren. Last time we did that, interests rates soared and the economy collapsed. The United States lost revenue from being squeezed by the need to borrow to pay interest, and people lost their jobs."

At a later appearance in Wolfeboro — where rival Mitt Romney has a lakefront summer home — Giuliani said the solution lies in borrowing to reward corporate cronies with contracts.

"We should love this problem of taxes being too high by giving as much money as possible to our friends," he said, standing on the steps of an ice cream shop.

Last week, donkeyotay called the Repubics the "party of looters" and singled out Giuliani for criticism on economics and foreign policy.

Giuliani argued that he favors stealing from tax payers to reward cronies, and borrowing and spending to keep people from catching on.

"That's what makes America great, we can write legislation and there's nothing the little people can do to stop us. Democrats want to give us government that delivers something to the people for their taxes," he said, "And under that system, what's the advantage of being rich?"

Sticks and stones will beak my bones Rudy, but names will never hurt me.
He should have completed his tax raising statement with the statement, 'to make up for the deficit the Republicans have created through irresponsible tax cuts and an unneccesary military operation that cost about 20 times what the initial estimate was'

25. About that 40% of revenue
First, I sincerely doubt we lost "40% of revenue" unless he's talking a very narrow category, and I doubt the number even then. If true, it sounds like a very cherry-picked number.

Second, the Repubs cut taxes. Is not cutting taxes the same as cutting revenue? I'm pretty sure that it is. Bush cut more revenue than Clinton did. Hell, Clinton managed to get enough revenue to get us into a surplus!

Repubs didn't make the country any less expensive to operate, so where did the money come from? Only one place - the national credit cards, Debtcard and Deficitcard.

The alternate universe hums on....

31. If he's worried about the government controlling our lives
then he'd better worry about the supreme court that bush has engineered... the govt. will soon be controlling women's reporducitve rights, for starters. And with all the surveillance we are all under thanks to this REPUKE administration, and bush claiming the right to seize the assets of anyone who disagrees with the war... I'd say the days of the govt. controling our entire lives are pretty much at hand, and it's not a Democratic president that has caused all of this.

New Hampshire isn't quite the repug stronghold it used to be. A flow of Dems from Massachusetts
has narrowed the gap between dems and repukes. This has been going on for some time.

Secondly-Lower taxes? One thing is true about New Hampshire, no income tax. But if they don't get you there, they will find some other way to get it out of you. In New Hampshire they use property taxes instead.

62. I don't think the people are buying the "smaller gov't" from
Repugs argument anymore.

People figured out they need protection not from the gov't, but protection by the gov't from the corporations, who have the real power in this country.

And about "smaller gov't", you know what Rudy, that also means CHEAPER. You can't claim "smaller gov't" then increase defense spending (including Iraq spending) to the point of nearly bankrupting the country, and deny people services they want like consumer protection, predatory lending protection, healthcare, etc.

Who still believes this crap coming from them? Can't be more than 20% of the people.

Rudy is a mobster elitist. God forbid we ever see him as president.

70. Personally, I'd take Mary Poppins over Father Guiliani any day of the week!
One thing I absolutely don't get about the Cons using the slanderous Nanny idea is they completely diss the importance women have had in rearing the children! It's so contradictary to me that these are the same people who promote stay at home moms on the notion that it's better for the children, then gripe about how "Nanny" (women) would be horrible if in charge. :wtf:
