TORONTO (CP) - It was a good-news-bad-news story that touched everyone in the land, a rollicking tale of a 63-cent weakling that bulked up in just a few months while the former bully of the foreign exchange markets shrivelled.
The rise in Canada's currency against the U.S. dollar was the biggest Canadian business story of 2003, according to a survey of editors and broadcasters by The Canadian Press and its Broadcast News affiliate.
"The soaring loonie was the business story of the year because of its effect on the economy and jobs," Don McCurdy, managing editor of the Waterloo Region Record in southwestern Ontario, commented on his electronic ballot.
"It's a story that had a much bigger impact on Canadians than any other business story in 2003."
