Bush set to visit Libya in first half of 2004
I treat this World Tribune with cautious skepticism.

http://www.worldtribune.com/worldtribune/breaking_1.html

Libya is preparing for defense cooperation talks with the United States, leading to a visit by President Bush early next year.

Libyan officials said the United States has agreed to review Tripoli's defense requirements in wake of an agreement by Col. Moammar Khaddafy to eliminate his nation's medium-range missile and weapons of mass destruction arsenal. The officials said the two countries plan to begin formal talks on Libya's defense and security requirements over the next few months.

The officials said Britain and the United States will lift sanctions from Libya by April 2004. They said this would pave the way for a visit by U.S. President George Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair to Tripoli during the first half of next year.

"The United States has promised to protect us from any attack," Khaddafy's son, Seif Al Islam, said in an interview with the London-based A-Sharq Al Awsat daily on Dec. 24.

1. The only reason Bush would visit Libya
is to promote the notion that the occupation of Iraq is "transforming" the region by making "rogue states" "get in line". That's the only spin I can come up with.

2. Whoa. We promised to "protect them from any attack"? In writing?
WHO is going to attack them????????????????????????

Jesus H. Christ. Pre-emption didn't sell. But everybody liked going in to protect Kuwait. So we'll promise to protect Libya and Libya will be attacked by Syria and Iran and we'll HAVE to protect Libya and nobody will be mad.

Tell me I'm wrong. Please. I'm begging.

3. This is too funny.
I can hardly wait to see Shrub and Qaddafi standing on
the podium and hugging each other, then giving long
speechs about freedom and democracy.

13. Yeah, a grotesquerie from the Age of Totalitarianism
Qaddafi and Bush, two men who have done much to set back the cause of Liberty will be making Stalinesque speeches about how they LOOOOOVE freedom.

It will be a laughably nauseating example of what Third World Nations like Imperial Amerika and Libya (admittedly, Amerika is still transforming from Free to Third World) can stoop to.

9. Seen this before / not going to happen
No way is Bush doing a photo op with Khaddafy. The best Khaddafy can hope for is Powell.

10. Oh, so now Khadafi is fit to meet with Bush,
but a couple of years ago when Farrakhan met with him, he was the evil incarnate.

11. Libya was the first country to issue an international arrest warrant for
Osama bin Laden. Happened in 1998, for murder and gun running. Released by Interpol in April of that year.

Perhaps Qaddafi will ask Bush just how serious the United States is about fighting terror.

12. Bush: "Sorry about our former great leader Ronnie Raygun killing
your daughter Malamar, but even though I know you made this decision years ago and it's basically a financial move on your part, couldn't we just act like you did this because you're afraid of me? You know, maybe we'll get some WH photographers here an' you could get that look in your eye? Kinda like the look Cheney gets when I tell him I gotta great idea? Then maybe you could beg a little and oh, you know, a fainting spell might help...

14. I can't think of Khaddafy without thinking of that SNL commercial
from years ago - "The Khaddafi Look." It was a spoof of the Calvin Klein ads of the 70s.
