Edwards Says Votes Count, Not Money
Source: Associated Press

Jul 7, 4:48 PM (ET)

By PHILIP ELLIOTT

MOULTONBOROUGH, N.H. (AP) - Presidential hopeful John Edwards said Saturday he's raising enough money to compete in the early states and invoked Howard Dean's 2004 fundraising totals as a cautionary tale.

"Money will not decide who the nominee's going to be," Edwards said in an interview with The Associated Press. "Everyone will remember Governor Dean who outraised everyone else by more than 2-to-1 and wasn't able to win the nomination."

Edwards' campaign reported it raised $9 million from April through June. It's a shortfall compared to Sens. Barack Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton - his top rivals who best him both in the polls and fundraising tallies.

"I like very much where I am," Edwards said, taking a break from his three-day vacation with his wife and two youngest children. "Among the three of us, I'm the underdog. I'm fighting. I like that place. It's always worked very well for me. That's the story of my life."

10. Gore, isn't going to shut the door Edwards is going to be his V.P/
Gore was speaking of poverty on T.V.this week, sounded much like Edwards,,, Two Southerners made a fine administration, and two more will do the same thing.

3. thanks for this tidbit
I agree and I like the idea that JRE has a budget for his campaign. He's not going to try to outraise or outspend either.

6. Thanks to AFSCME I got to talk to John Edwards and shake his hand in 2004

It wasn't much, but I'll remember it for my lifetime. It has been two weeks since I converted from Gore to Edwards. I have no regrets. The vacation photo is the one I'd want autographed! :-) I'm just trying to decide who the running mate should be?

7. I have a Gore story for you .....
My son is a FAM and flies undercover. Do you remember the incident a few years ago when Al had to go through a shakedown at the TSA checkpoint? The joke being even the Vice President doesn't get a pass! He was my son's seat mate, but Al had no idea he was a fed.....Al joked with him, "8 years on Air Force 2 was a lot different than flying commercial". They talked about everything and my son said he was warm and funny, a most unforgettable moment for him also.

a while! Saw him in St. Pete, FL in 2004! I pushed my way through the crowd just to get that hand shake and a look in his eyes! It was really hot that day too!!

15. True, but...
TV ads, radio ads, billboards, staff...

Money may not count, but it sure as hell helps win votes.

17. Sure, votes are nice, but the same forces that conspired against Dean...
to negate his monetary advantage are now arrayed against Edwards. But with Trippi on his team I'm sure he's only too aware of that.

20. Getting the Democratic message out is difficult at best ...
... unlike the crazy lady in California leading CHIP down the highway that was covered without fees for over an hour by CNN MSNBC and others, with short news clips of her fiasco picked up by all and sundry.

There are good reasons MSM caters to the radical right, and it's all about money.

21. Ever the optimist! I like Edwards, he reminds me of FDR in terms of
being a wealthy man with a desire to help the poor.
