Employees picket amid rumours plant is closing

By: Louie Rosella

June 18, 2007 - About 170 members of a United Steelworkers (USW) local, who are worried that they will lose their severance pay if the company folds, are picketing a Mississauga plant this morning.

The workers are employed at Collins and Aikman Plastics, located on Abilene Dr. in the Kennedy Rd. and Hwy. 401 area.

Betty Hynes pickets outside of auto parts maker Collins and Aikman this morning. Workers held the protest at the Abeline St. amidst fears that they will lose their severance pay if the company folds.

“We have no assurances of any severance if the plant closes,” worker Carter Meunier told The News shortly after the action began this morning.

"The parent company has filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States and it looks like that might happen here, too,” said Meunier, who has worked at the plant for 11 years.

The worker, who lost his previous job in manufacturing after his employer moved to Mexico and the United States, says the USW Local 9042 members felt they had to act now.

“If we wait for them to file for bankruptcy, we could get nothing,” he said. “This plant is still producing.”

Collins and Aikman makes parts for the auto industry, predominantly Daimler-Chrysler.
Officials from the company could not immediately be reached for comment.

The story really doesn't say...an escrow account or what? It would appear the decision about closing the plant is really above the heads of the workers and local management
