HONOLULU ADVERTISER

HILO, Hawaii — Hundreds of small earthquakes that suggest that magma is on the move under the surface of the Kilauea volcano sent scientists and national park officials scrambling over the weekend and prompted the rare closure of most of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The earthquake swarm began at 2:15 a.m. Sunday, with more than 260 recorded in 17 hours. Another nine were reported on the island of Hawaii between midnight and 4 a.m. today, as well as one 26 miles offshore. The largest of those registered a 3.2 magnitude at the U.S. Geological Survey at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

by Mitch Battros - Earth Changes Media

About 70 shallow earthquakes in 2 hours occurred beneath the upper east rift zone of Kîlauea early this morning. The swarm began at 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, June 17 and is ongoing. Some quakes are in the mid 3's magnituds. The earthquakes are centered 1 km (1 mile) southwest of Mauna Ulu and are concentrated between 1.5 and 3 kilometers (1-2 miles) deep. As of 4:30 a.m., ten of the quakes had magnitudes greater than 3 and were felt by nearby residents.

All data so far is consistent with the event being a shallow intrusion of magma. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is watching the situation closely and has deployed field crews to the scene.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has taken the following precautionary measures: Chain of Craters road is closed. Crater Rim Drive is closed between Jaggar museum and the Thurston lava tube parking lot. NPS personnel are sweeping both roads to evacuate visitors

I wouldn't even FLY OVER Hawaii, but I am a devout self-preservationist with a pronounced sense of impending doom.

YOU have a good time, though.

But I doubt that I would anyway.

I'm definitely bringing Pele a big bottle of Sapphire Gin to smooth our way. Yes, I believe she's "for real". I don't care if people want to mock me for it.

13. No, no. Not that kind of volcano.
Edited on Mon Jun-18-07 01:55 PM by aquart
IIRC, Hawaii has shield volcanoes, not andesitic, explosive ones. Usually, you can just walk away from Hawaiian lava floes. It's what the islands are made of.

Honestly, with the ocean rise due to global warming, it wouldn't hurt the Hawaiian islands to pick up some extra inches.

2. not good.
Well, it's not called the "Ring of Fire" for nothing. It's a hot spot which runs from Japan, to Hawaii, all the way down to Chile and Punta Arenas.
Anything goes.

4. You're confusing your terms.
Hawaii is not a part of the Ring of Fire. The Hawaii chain is a hot spot, but it runs through the middle of the ring of fire.

12. Except Hawaii is not part of the ring of fire...
Edited on Mon Jun-18-07 01:40 PM by Blue Belle
Hawaii is a hot spot volcano that forms over a mantle plume in the earth's crust. The volcano basically rises from a magma chamber in the ocean floor and that is how all the Hawaiian Islands formed. When the plate shifts off that spot (through sea-floor spreading/plate tectonics), the volcano will become dormant and a new one will form. The Ring of Fire is a huge chain of subduction zone volcanoes that form at the plate boundaries of the Pacific plate (forming a giant ring).

16. This is probably more like a gift to Hawaii.
The ocean is rising. Adding more lava (the stuff of which Hawaii is made) to the islands can only help them survive the upcoming changes.
