Romney Says He Wants 'Big Stick'
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 4:17 p.m. ET

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) -- Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney said Saturday that if he's elected, he wants ''to carry the big stick'' by increasing the size of the nation's military.

The former Massachusetts governor said his plans include boosting the size of the military by at least 100,000 troops and increasing the military budget.

Romney recalled the words of President Theodore Roosevelt, who said the United States should ''Speak softly and carry a big stick,'' in its foreign relations

53. I just don't see Repukes
voting for a military draft. They'd either have to include their debutante daughters, or risk having the Supreme Court do that for them. I'm absolutely certain that a male-only military draft will be challenged in the courts.

No wonder we are the only industrial nation in the world without national health.

Teddy.
I guess by extension Mitt will also be progressive trust buster, an advocate for the FDA, a friend of unions, and proponent of conservation, a supporter of public works. oh and unlike Mitt, Teddy actually did serve in the military with distinction and was an avid sportsman not some draft dodging rat shooter.

I doubt if Mitt will win the Nobel Peace Prize like Teddy did when he was instrumental in negotiating the end of the Russo-Japanese War.

Here's some good quotes from Teddy that I expect Mitt to take to heart, though I doubt he ever will.....

"This country will not be a permanently good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a reasonably good place for all of us to live in."

"To destroy this invisible Government, to dissolve the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day."

"This country belongs to the people. Its resources, its business, its laws, its institutions, should be utilized, maintained, or altered in whatever manner will best promote the general interest."

“The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts about reality.”

"Let the watchwords of all our people be the old familiar watchwords of honesty, decency, fair-dealing, and commonsense."

"The welfare of each of us is dependent fundamentally upon the welfare of all of us."

"Viewed purely in the abstract, I think there can be no question that women should have equal rights with men."

"Women should have free access to every field of labor which they care to enter, and when their work is as valuable as that of a man it should be paid as highly."

"Optimism is a good characteristic, but if carried to an excess, it becomes foolishness. We are prone to speak of the resources of this country as inexhaustible; this is not so."

"So any nation which in its youth lives only for the day, reaps without sowing, and consumes without husbanding, must expect the penalty of the prodigal whose labor could with difficulty find him the bare means of life."

"There can be no greater issue than that of conservation in this country."

"The movement for the conservation of wild life and the larger movement for the conservation of all our natural resources are essentially democratic in spirit, purpose, and method."

"There are two things that I want you to make up your minds to: first, that you are going to have a good time as long as you live - I have no use for the sour-faced man - and next, that you are going to do something worthwhile, that you are going to work hard and do the things you set out to do."

"The object of government is the welfare of the people."

"There should be relentless exposure of and attack upon every evil practice, whether in politics, in business, or in social life. I hail as a benefactor every writer or speaker, every man who, on the platform, or in book, magazine or newspaper, with merciless severity makes such attack, provided always that he in his turn remembers that the attack is of use only if it is absolutely truthful."

"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."

Edited on Sun Jun-17-07 12:36 AM by arewenotdemo
You want more than that?????

MIKE WALLACE: While all of them have served their church doing missionary work around the world... has any one of you ever decided that you're going to put on a uniform and go to war?

JOSH ROMNEY: I feel guilty having not done it.

BEN ROMNEY: I've seen a lot and read a lot that has made me say, "my goodness, I hope I never have to do that."

WALLACE: Not one agreed or thought about serving in the military.

MATT ROMNEY: There are other sacrifices to make as well, and I hope to be able to make a sacrifice of that, you know, of that caliber at some point in my life.

WALLACE: Did you ever serve in the armed forces?

FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY: I did not.

WALLACE: Why not?

ROMNEY: I was at college. Then I went off and served my church for two and a half years.

WALLACE: In a mission.

ROMNEY: In a mission.

WALLACE: And because of his high lottery number, he was never drafted to serve in Vietnam, something he says he regrets to this day.

PS: Never trust any "man" that prefaces a statement with "my goodness" (see Rumsfeld, Herr).

Here I thought he was trying to distance himself from his gay associations to appeal to the conservative base, and now the guy's telling the national press that he wants a "big stick."

This seems less like the NYTimes and more like Time Out New York.

Seriously, though, this should be a really embarassing moment for him. He comes off as a doofus.

"If you look across the world you can recognize that there is terror going on."

Boy, does he sound ready for the big time. As in, "big time weenie." Which is apparently what he wants...

If we REDUCED the military to what is only necessary to DEFEND ourselves, we wouldn't be able to launch aggress pre-emptive ILLEGAL WARS BASED ON LIES any more - THAT's what I'd like to see...

We have nukes for the "mad man" defense - we don't NEED a "large" military. Period.
