Challenge to Ore. prison guard union rejected

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) — Prison guards have decided to stay with their union instead of switching to another union.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees will continue to represent about 1,700 state Corrections Department security staff after a 663-480 vote to stay with AFSCME.

The Association of Oregon Corrections Employees had challenged AFSCME as the bargaining representative for those workers.

The association filed a petition in March to decertify AFSCME. The Oregon Employment Relations Board approved that petition and at the end of May and AFSCME mailed ballots to union members. The results were announced Friday.
