Eighteen US Congressmen have taken up cudgels on behalf of Bhopal gas victims in their battle with Dow Chemical, the company that has acquired the infamous Union Carbide but has refused to assume any liability for the 1984 tragedy.
Leading the new initiative, India Caucus activist Frank Pallone and 17 other lawmakers have asked the Michigan-based Dow to address the liabilities it has inherited and take immediate steps towards reparations in Bhopal.
In a missive to Dow’s CEO William Stavropolous, the Congressmen have sought four specific actions: Ensure the appearance of a Union Carbide representative at the ongoing criminal case in Bhopal; meet the demands of survivors for medical and economic rehabilitation; clean up the contamination around the factory site; and provide alternative supplies of freshwater.
“The disaster in Bhopal continues, and is likely to worsen if Dow Chemical does not step forward to fulfil its responsibilities. More disturbing is the manner in which Union Carbide and Dow Chemical have ignored summons of the Bhopal court,” the members said in their letter.
