ABC Apologizes for Marion Barry Flub

ABC News has apologized for mistakenly running a picture of former Washington Mayor Marion Barry when it was promoting a "World News" story about a man suing a dry cleaner for $54 million for losing his pants.

Both Roy L. Pearson, who filed the lawsuit, and Barry are black. Barry's picture ran for East Coast feeds Tuesday when Pearson's story was "teased" at the beginning of the news. It was corrected for later editions, spokeswoman Natalie Raabe said.

"We are deeply sorry for this mistake and apologize to Mr. Barry, Mr. Pearson and to our viewers for the error," ABC News wrote on its Web site. There was no on-air reference to the mistake. Anchor Charles Gibson has unsuccessfully tried to reach Barry for a personal apology, Raabe said.

It was the second such case of mistaken identity this month involving newsworthy black men. Fox News Channel apologized for running tape of House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers while reporting on the indictment of Rep. William J. Jefferson on bribery charges.

1. All I'll say is that it's real people doing these jobs and

unfortunate mistakes happen. I was running our local news the other night and one of the supers of Bush in Prague said Prague, Germany. No one lost their job over that one. This might be another story. Once you get to network news you're being paid to check, double and triple check but it's still just people putting these shows together and mistakes will happen. Maybe it was an intern or someone new. Maybe Marion Barry was in another story and the packages got reversed. Lots of things can go wrong in newscasts and frequently do.

I don't think it was because a whole network is racist.

People make mistakes. What would be the point of throwing Barry's face up there on purpose? Something like this isn't the same as "accidentally" placing a "D" next to the name of a Republican charged with messing around with kids or proclaiming Scooter Libby "not guilty".

12. May not be the network but they surely could do better

giving more assignments to minorities that know the difference.

It may just be a "slip up" to people that are Majorities but not to most Minorities.

It is a true "insult" in the eyes of my people.

But, it is difficult to wear the shoes of a minority because others will feel that we are being too sensitive.

We may be, but it comes from seeing hundreds of "mistakes" since the days of slavery for us.

I'm surprised it doesn't happen even more often.

I remember a while back when a news station was talking about the new Governor's mansion and the video showed pigs in a stockyard.

(The Governor was white, BTW.)
