Tonight's the Night: Iraq's Leader Had Told Reporters U.S. Could Start Pullout By June 1
Source: Editor & Publisher

Last November 30, as the Iraq Study Group was about to release its report -- and talk of a U.S. escalation still a few weeks off -- the press gave a lot of weight to the words of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki when he vowed that his country's forces would be able to assume security command by June 2007, which could allow the United States to start withdrawing its troops.

"I cannot answer on behalf of the U.S. administration but I can tell you that from our side our forces will be ready by June 2007," Maliki told ABC television after meeting President Bush in Amman, Jordan.

Maliki had replied to a question about whether U.S. troops could start withdrawing at that time.

As his promised deadline approached this month, the handover was as far from reality as ever and the U.S. suffered its highest rate of casualties in years.

2. Yeah, I remember that shit. And I remember that no one really took
it seriously. In fact, I think pretty much everyone was of the opinion that this guy was blowing smoke.

4. Why do you think the Bushies have been singing "See you in September?"
They know the embassy and permanent bases will be built, and that their puppet government will have passed a VERY favorable oil-revenue sharing bill!

5. Checking back. How's that troop pull out doing? How are the
Iraqi's doing standing up while we stand down? Oh yeah...

Baghdad - An official police source said that an armed group abducted five Iraqi soldiers near Kirkuk city Friday, as 44 unidentified bodies were found around the country, sources said.

Some security force personnel belonging to oil facilities in the area were ambushed by armed men on the main road to the south-west of Kirkuk, which is 290 kilometres north of Baghdad, independent Voices of Iraq news agency reported.

The forces were seized and taken to an unknown place, the source said.

No further details were immediately available.

Meanwhile, an Iraqi security source said that 29 unidentified bodies had been found in the 24 hours to Friday in different parts of the Iraqi capital
