Tom Delay Says His Adultery Different than Newt Gingrich's
Edited on Tue May-29-07 06:18 PM by fightthegoodfightnow
Source: The New Yorker

In the book, DeLay criticizes Gingrich for, among other things, conducting an affair with a Capitol Hill employee during the 1998 impeachment trial of Bill Clinton. (The woman later became Gingrich's third wife.) "Yes, I don't think that Newt could set a high moral standard, a high moral tone, during that moment," DeLay said. "You can't do that if you're keeping secrets about your own adulterous affairs." He added that the impeachment trial was another of his "proudest moments." The difference between his own adultery and Gingrich's, he said, "is that I was no longer committing adultery by that time, the impeachment trial. There's a big difference." He added, "Also, I had returned to Christ and repented my sins by that time."

Sin all you want. It's okay as long as you stop before you condemn someone else for the same sin.

40. Hmmmmmm.....
Kinda reminds me of that story where Jesus stops them from stoning the woman caught in the act of adultery (you know the one, "He among you who is without sin, let him cast the first stone."). Jesus wasn't fooled for a second, He knew a setup when He saw one; even 2,000 years ago you couldn't commit adultery all by yourself. But then, He was also castigated for consorting with "publicans and sinners" -- is it possible, could it be that their presumptive heirs are "re-"publicans?

12. I'm glad DeLay quit committing adultery and repented of his sins,

and Jesus did forgive a couple of adulterers, but I don't recall DeLay defending Clinton, who also repented, publicly, on national television. Why not speak up and support his fellow repentant sinner? I believe DeLay is a Southern Baptist, as Clinton is, so you'd think he might have had special empathy for a fellow Baptist sinner.

Nor do I think he has much of a point about the fact that Gingrich was still committing adultery at the time of the Clinton impeachment. One adulterer criticizing another adulterer is hypocritical.

Jesus said not to speak of the mote in your brother's eye until you got rid of the log in your own.

from stoning a woman to death for adultery. He said, "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."

The men all realized they were not without sin themselves and put down the stones.

55. Ah, but that's in the New Testament
These idiots have formed some sort of strange mishmash religion based mostly on the Old Testament, with whatever Paulian edicts they can pull out of the New Testament that will help back up their hypocrisy and bigotry. The four Gospels are pretty much shut out of their theology.

Tom DeLay, pundit Lawrence Kudlow, and their ilk are very like Joseph in the novel Wuthering Heights, placing all the Bible's blessings on themselves and the curses on their enemies -- not exactly the way of the Gospel. They obviously missed the bits you read, DemBones, or find them...inconvenient.

Upcoming sequel: A Tree grows in DeLay.

Thanks, CB. It seems that many conservatives need to

pay more attention to the New Testament, particularly the Gospels, if they claim to follow Christ.

If you really want to know "What Would Jesus Do?" the answers are in the Gospels, in what Jesus said.

I agree. In fact, if you follow the example of Christ, DeLay should have come to Clinton's defense not unlike what Christ did when the mob was trying to stone the prostitutes and it was Christ who defended them when he said "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." (Not a biblical scholar, but I believe that is the story.)

The thing between Big Dawg and Monica was over by then. Didn't Reverend (Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton or Billy Graham or some famous religious leader) drop by for some moral counseling to help the President return to Christ and repent his sins?
