Georgia moves primary to Feb. 5, joins national movement

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia joined a handful of other states holding earlier primary elections when Governor Perdue signed a bill today that pushes the state's presidential preference primary up by a month.

The measure moves the 2008 primary from March 4th to February 5th in hopes of creating a national primary day in most states. Arkansas, Delaware, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arizona and Utah are already planning primaries for February 5th.

Last week, Florida moved its primary to January 29th, leapfrogging several other states and putting the state behind only the Iowa and Nevada caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. It's also the same day as the South Carolina primary.

I fear for our primary system, there will not be any chance for a challenger to take on the big names before long. Of course maybe it is my delusion that such a chance ever existed.
