Sesame Tahini Recalled Due to Salmonella
By The Associated Press

Tuesday, May 29, 2007

(05-29) 13:13 PDT , (AP) --

The following product recall has been announced:

nSpired Natural Foods of San Leandro, Calif., is voluntarily recalling all MaraNatha Sesame Tahini in 16-ounce sizes with a "use by" date of April 11, 2008, and earlier, and 15-pound and 32-pound sizes with an expiration date of Jan. 5, 2008 (lot 07130), and earlier, because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. The organism can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. MaraNatha Sesame Tahini was distributed nationally through distributors, retail stores and mail order. Products affected are Organic Raw Sesame Tahini, Organic Roasted Sesame Tahini, Natural Raw Sesame Tahini and Natural Roasted Sesame Tahini. Details: by phone, 1-800-883-8312.

3. I had to check the open jar in my fridge.
It was not from the suspect lots, thankfully.

I'm not picking on you, submitter; I discovered the news independently. :hi:

5. Thanks, but yours is a different tahini recall --Whole Foods' 365 label.
Edited on Tue May-29-07 06:16 PM by Gormy Cuss
I wouldn't be surprised if the two are linked however. nSpired may be the contractor for Whole Foods. Today's recall is for their own brand, MaraNatha.

With our crack food safety system it probably took a week for someone to suggest that all the tahini from that run needed to be recalled.
:hi:

edited to fix spelling of brand name

6. Wow. I buy MaraNatha peanut and soy butter.
I should probably pay attention to any further recalls.

9. It appears to be a widening recall --thanks for the Canada link.

Now they're recalling many sizes and dates.

on edit: just found a press release from the FDA issued last Friday. It was the Canada inspection agency that discovered the problem first.

10. I'm getting really tired of the problems with the food supply.

We became vegetarians to avoid all the problems that keep cropping up in meat but tahini, peanut butter, spinach, the deliberately adulterated gluten from China? We can't live on air.

I wonder how the US ranks in safety of its food supply in relation to other countries?

13. "...use by date of April 11, 2008, and earlier,"
So my partially eaten 16 oz jar of MaraNatha organic creamy & roasted Sesame Tahini which I snagged at the health food store last weekend says "use by 03/03/08"

And the question is: Since I didn't get sick or die, is it safe to continue eating it?

Wat

14. The quantity of germs you consume makes a difference.
Stop eating it. See if you can get your money back. It's not worth the risk.

18. Most people won't get sick from it
It depends on the quantity of germs and your immune system. Hundreds of thousands of people probably consumed it, but only a small percentage got sick if any.

Still I wouldn't risk it.

15. The real question is
How much other nasty shit are we eating right now that we'll find out about next week, next year or never? My girlfriend was down for two days with mystery food poisoning last week and we have no idea where she got it.

Personally, I'd rather spend two days passed out on the bathroom floor than get heavy metal or PCB poisoning, but I suppose it's not an either/or proposition, is it? :banghead:

It might be best to call or email the hummus maker for info.
