Two U.S. Soldiers Killed by Bombs in Central Iraq(Not a dupe. 2 more dead)
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20031226/ts_nm/iraq_bombs_dc&cid=564&ncid=1480

TIKRIT (Reuters) - Two U.S. soldiers were killed by bombs in two separate incidents in Iraq (news - web sites) on Friday, a U.S. military spokesman said.

A roadside bomb killed one soldier and wounded another when it detonated by a convoy near Baquba, about 40 miles north of Baghdad, early on Friday, and a second soldier was killed trying to defuse a bomb outside the town, Captain Jefferson Wolfe said.

Two other U.S. soldiers were killed in a mortar attack on a U.S. camp near Baquba on Thursday, extending the biggest spate of guerrilla activity in and around the Iraqi capital since U.S. forces captured Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) earlier this month.

1. That makes 8 dead and how many wounded?
Eight, right?

My German neighbor was so elated when Saddam was captured, telling me that the violence would soon end. I just smiled and changed the subject, which he brought me back to, as if I hadn't heard him the first time.

I have an extra "pace" flag in the closet. Maybe I should give it to him to hang from his balcony. We could become "peace twins" for the New Year.

Unfortunately, it's going to take more than banner-waving to get the US, indeed, the world, out of this Bush mess.

7. 'BRING EM ON"
I wonder what the children will think 15 years from now when they remember that their parent was killed on Christmas in a vile, unjust war that had no purpose and was justified by lies and deceit.

15. America needs immediate psychiatric care a la Bush spin
Unfortunately, an overabundance of the population can't even afford to be immunized.

I wake up every day telling myself, "Thank Christ I don't live in the U.S."

6. down for a few days then...
I think the total for the week is 11 dead. Of curse we don't here about all the Iraqis that are killed on a daily basis through US actions and the lawlessness, chaos and anarchy in Iraq. Every time a major US offensive is launched there is an in ital drop in attacks and the administration and media whores try and spin it as an ending of the insurgency. The reality is the guerrillas are laying low, hiding and regrouping only to eventually hammer our forces again. This is winnable and the longer this ensues the more Iraqi's become hardened against the US and part of the resistance. All one has to look at is the West Bank and magnify (I have no idea of by how much) to see what we are dealing with.

5. This just infuriates me...
from the reuters story....

<The U.S. casualties brought to 210 the number of U.S. combat deaths since Washington -- now under pressure over troop casualties as the 2004 presidential election approaches -- announced the end of major combat in Iraq on May 1. >

How about almost 500 KILLED!! Since the Invasion of Iraq! :grr:

8. And what infuriates me is the use of the term "major combat"
It's as if they're trying to tell us, "We told you it wasn't over, so don't bitch about it if the troops are dying."

We knew it wasn't over on Mayday (ironic, isn't it?), and we've been counting the casualties since Day 1 of Operation FUBAR, whether the media has or not.

:grr:

17. And what infuriates me is bush didn't say major
He said combat operations were over and yet the media continues to repeat their revised history. I don't care if he really 'meant' major, it wasn't what was said. And you can bet if it were a democratic president we would be hearing what was said not what was
'meant'. Agggh!

9. I wonder if Halliburton or Kellog
ever send flowers or condolence cards to the families? Or would that make it too obvious as to who's "vital interests" these soldiers are fighting for?

11. This is evidence that we are now "safer" since Saddam was captured
Edited on Fri Dec-26-03 12:17 PM by IndianaGreen
and it also shows why we should not vote for the prowar Democratic candidates that lauded Bush for making us "safer."

The only people that are "safe" are the dead!

12. Riverbend: Christmas in Baghdad
Christmas in Baghdad...

Explosions and bombing almost all day yesterday and deep into the night. At some points it gets hard to tell who is bombing who? Resistance or Americans? Tanks or mortars? Cluster bombs or IEDs? Nothing on the news… to see the reports on CNN, Abu Dhabi, and Al-Arabia you'd think there was nothing going on in Baghdad beyond the usual thumps and thuds. Yesterday was *very* unusual. Embassies, mines, residential areas and the Green Zone… and the sirens. I hate the sirens. I can stand the explosions, the rattling windows, the slamming doors, the planes, the helicopters… but I feel like my heart is wailing when I hear the sirens.

The explosions haven't really put anyone in a very festive spirit. The highlight of the last few days, for me, was when we went to our Christian friends' home to keep them company on Christmas Eve. We live in a neighborhood with a number of Christian families and, under normal circumstances, the area would be quite festive this time of year- little plastic Santas on green lawns, an occasional plastic wreath on a door and some colored, blinking lights on trees.

Our particular friends (Abu Josef's family) specialized in the lights. Every year, a week before Christmas, they would not only decorate their own plastic tree (evergreens are hard to come by in Iraq), but they would decorate 4 different olive trees in the little garden in front of their home with long strings of red lights. Passing by their house, the scene of the green olive trees with branches tangled in little red lights always brought a smile… you couldn't help but feel the 'Christmas spirit'- Christians and Muslims alike.

This year the trees weren't decorated because, as their father put it, "We don't want to attract too much attention… and it wouldn't be right with the electricity shortage." The tree inside of their house *was* decorated, however, and it was almost sagging with ornaments. The traditional tree ornaments were hanging, but the side of the tree was covered with not-so-traditional Pokemon toys. Their 8-year-old is an avid collector of those little Pokemon finger puppets and the bottom section of the tree was drooping with the weight of the little plastic figures which took Iraq by storm a couple of years ago.

14. DJ Iraqi Rebels Kill 11 US Soldiers In Iraq This Week
A total of 11 U.S. soldiers have died from hostile action since Monday.
U.S. forces had increased security in the capital following threats of attacks
over Christmas, but the strikes showed how easily small bands of rebels operate
under cover of night in the city center, and then slip away.
At the same time, the furtive, hit-and-run operations revealed the inability
of rebels to confront the superior firepower of U.S. soldiers.
They also
inflicted far less damage than attacks by suicide bombers in recent months that
killed dozens of people at embassies, police stations and the U.N. headquarters
in Baghdad.

I have to roll my eyes on how a so-called journalist can get away with such a blatant non-sequitur……11 are still friggin’ dead christ’s sake….pathetic…
