MOSCOW (AFP) - Russia on Tuesday said it had successfully tested a new-generation intercontinental ballistic missile, firing it 6,000 kilometres across the country, news agencies reported.

Fired from the north-eastern Arkhangelsk region, the RS-24 rocket hit its target on the Kamchatka Peninsula that juts into the Pacific Ocean, ITAR-TASS cited a spokesman for the country's strategic missile forces, Vadim Koval, as saying.

"The stated aim of the launch has been achieved," he said.

1. Russia could be a problem. They seem to be rampingup their military and
ramping down their ties with the Whitehouse. I don't know what their ties with Britain, France, etc. are, however with the governmental shake-ups in those countries I doubt they've been paying great attention to Pooty and his KGB cronies.

7. The US spends 17 times as much as Russia.
What's the problem? Is no one to have a self-defense capacity?

Russia test-launches new ICBM

By JIM HEINTZ, Associated Press Writer 14 minutes ago

MOSCOW - Russia on Tuesday test-launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple independent warheads, and a top government official said it could penetrate any defense system, a news agency reported.

The new missile would modernize Russia's stockpile at a time of rising tensions with the West.

The ICBM was fired from a mobile launcher at the Plesetsk launch site in northwestern Russia, and its test warhead landed on target about 3,400 miles away on the Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, a statement from the Russian Strategic Missile Forces said.

President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said Russia would continue to improve its nuclear weapons systems and respond to U.S. plans to deploy a missile defense system in Europe.

What Russia is not telling us is that their new missile - which penetrates any defense system created now or in the future - is that it only does 1d4+1 points of damage and does not affect inanimate objects.

5. Sales pitch for the arms race
Seen all this before. Only winners are uber rich investors in certain industries. Biggest losers, actual troops who get less of what they need so nations can spend more defense dollar$ on high-end gadgets.

Then, in a few years, more investors make $$ on the business of decommissioning the toys.

Vicious circle and bye-bye peace dividend for the masses.

6. A counter to our counter
This is in response to the U.S. pulling out of the ABM treaty in 2002 which we did so we could protect ourselves from North Korea and Iran. Maybe instead of calling them out in the Axis of Evil we could have dealt with them diplomatically and not have had to piss off the Russians too. Things sure were nice when we could say that the Cold War was over.
