Ten US troops killed as Iraq debate heats up

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Ten more American soldiers have been killed in fighting in Iraq, the military announced on Sunday, on the eve of war-weary Washington's annual Memorial Day commemoration of its war dead.

But in a victory for US and Iraqi forces, troops liberated 41 people from an Al-Qaeda run torture facility in a lawless province northeast of Baghdad.

Most of the 10 US soldiers were slain in and around Baghdad, the epicentre of Iraq's vicious sectarian conflict and the focus of a controversial 28,000-strong surge in US troop numbers, which is due to peak next month.

Four soldiers were killed in two attacks in the Sunni province of Salaheddin on Saturday, while another four were killed in blasts in the capital. A marine and another soldier died in combat north and west of the capital.

2. Like Viet Nam, the 'enemy' is picking up the pace.
But then again, like Viet Nam' we were in a foreign country trying to enforce our will on them, and fighting a war we could never win.

The bodies of 12 men, aged 15 to 24.

It's just ironic how many more troops are being killed while bush refuses to discuss withdrawal. :grr:

12. I am painfully aware of child soldiers, their captivity of serving as soldiers.
My quarrel is with news stories that strip quasi-children of the sadness we normally associate with the death of a child, by lumping a 15-year-old into a group of "men." :(

... per the news quote, the tortured were 15-24 year old, military age men (vs women) as the target of the captors, that were killed? While I agree with the issue you address, I simply did not read it that way you did I guess? Which, per my son, is kind of the way it is in Iraq with military age Iraqi men (2 tours in Iraq as a Marine). But I do feel you pain...

23. My thoughts exactly.
I thought the dems would bring about an end to the war. Now party leaders are working to keep us there despite what they say. It's no wonder "third parties" are picking up steam. I never again want to hear that voting for a third party is like voting for a Republican. On some of the most important issues, voting dem is like voting for a Republican.

30. Support the real antiwar candidates like Kucinich, or even the repentant Edwards
They are far preferable to those that still call for keeping a US military presence in Iraq beyond 2009, such as Hillary, Obama, Biden, etc.

Sounds to me like we're really getting this surge together now. Did anyone in their right mind think this was NOT going to happen? More killing, more destruction, more misery for us as well as the poor Iraqi's who once had a life. This is so sad. OUT NOW!!
