Dems: Fight over Iraq war has just begun
Source: AP

WASHINGTON - Democrats may have lost the first round with President Bush on ending the war in Iraq since taking over Congress in January, but they say their fight has just begun.

In the months ahead, lawmakers will vote repeatedly on whether U.S. troops should stay and whether Bush has the authority to continue the war. The Democratic strategy is intended to ratchet up pressure on the president, as well as on moderate Republicans who have grown tired of defending Bush administration policy in a deeply unpopular war.

"I feel a direction change in the air," said Rep. John Murtha (news, bio, voting record), D-Pa., chairman of the House panel that oversees military funding.

Democrats looked to the upcoming votes after losing a bruising battle with Bush on an emergency war spending bill. Lacking the two-thirds majority needed to overcome another presidential veto, Democrats dropped from the legislation a provision ordering troops home from Iraq beginning this fall.

3. As long as Bush has his money the way he wants it
does anyone seriously think he'll pay any attention to any bills about Iraq coming out of Congress now? The point of the Constitution is to give Congress the power of the purse. They gave away their power.

10. The Dems can no longer pretend they are against the war.
From this point forward, the deaths of the troops are their responsibility as well. They could have ended the war by not funding it. But they didn't. So it is now theirs to own as well. Fools.

11. It's just begun again, AGAIN?
Every time they screw up they think, "Okay, now we're serious. We'll start again?" Is everyone in DC insane? The GOP thinks now they can get the war in Iraq right - again. And the Dems think they can start fighting it - again.

I agree with the bird & I hope he hangs around outside the venerable halls of Congress all summer. :sarcasm:

12. Am I the only one to whom it seems we hear this a great deal
after giving something up or losing something?

"We have them right where we want them"
"We're just keeping our powder dry"

How about we take a stand, and if we go down (and we would have, as at best, another stand would have been vetoed) do so honorably?

13. This makes no *ucking sense WHATSOEVER.
If the two dem FRONT-RUNNERS for PRESIDENT can vote AGAINST
this provision, WHY is it "POLITICAL DEATH" for the others
to do so?

29. The fight over the Iraq War was lost in Oct. '02 with passage of HAVA.
Our Democratic leaders, just like Bushites Tom Delay and Bob Ney, wanted to insure that, no matter how high the percentage of the American people who oppose the war gets, elections will always turn out office holders who are 60/40 for the war.

IWR. HAVA. October 2002. That WAS the coup. The rest of this is just theater.
