Report: NKorea fires missiles

TOKYO - North Korea fired short-range missiles several times
toward the Sea of Japan on Friday, Kyodo News agency reported,
citing Japanese and U.S. sources.

Japanese defense and foreign ministry officials said they could
not immediately confirm the report.

North Korea's missile development has been a constant concern
to the region, along with its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

1. S. Korea: N. Korea conducts missile test
SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea fired several short-range guided missiles Friday in an apparent test launch, South Korean officials and media reports said.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the launches, but said it was still investigating how many missiles were fired and where exactly the tests occurred.

"The short-range missile launches are believed to be part of a routine exercise that North Korea has conducted annually on the east and the west coasts in the past," the Joint Chiefs said in a statement.

Japan's public broadcaster and other media, citing Japanese and U.S. sources, reported that the missiles were surface-to-ship. Japan's Defense Ministry and Foreign Ministry could not immediately confirm the reports, but were investigating.

2. Here we go...if this doesn't give Cheney an erection, nothing will.
I can just imagine what the discussion will be in the White House today:

- Dems are the spineless cowards we knew they'd be. Good work, KKKarl.

- Gotta get more money flowing into Halliburton and defense contractors over the next year, before we leave office, because that will be the end of the guarantee period for them.

Congress: IMPEACH!

4. US: North Korea missile test is 'routine'
US: North Korea missile test is 'routine' 22 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The White House on Friday played down North Korea's first missile tests in almost a year, calling them a "routine exercise" amid a continuing logjam in implementing a nuclear disarmament deal.

"It appears to be a routine exercise," said US national security council spokesman Gordon Johndroe.

Seoul described the launch of the short-range missiles as part of routine military exercises but they drew a sharp response from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who said Tokyo's patience with Pyongyang was running out.

They also came at a sensitive time as US and other negotiators struggle to settle a banking row which is blocking the start of North Korea's promised nuclear disarmament.

North Korea fired one missile, not several: report

Fri May 25, 10:43 PM ET

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea fired just one, not several, short-range
missile off its east coast on Friday and may follow up with the launch
of another from its west, South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted
intelligence sources as saying on Saturday.

Japan's NHK television said on Friday that the North launched surface-
to-ship missiles from its east and west coasts, and the United States
and its Asian allies downplayed them as part of normal military drills.

"North Korea fired one missile towards the east sea, but it's impossible
to confirm its type except it's believed to be a short-range missile,"
one of the sources was quoted as saying.

Defense Ministry and National Intelligence Service officials reached by
telephone could not confirm the report.
