NASIRIYA, Iraq, May 16 (Reuters) - Militias loyal to Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr clashed with Iraqi forces in the southern city of Nasiriya on Wednesday which killed four people and wounded 40, Iraqi police and hospital sources said.

A police lieutenant said the fighting broke out after police arrested two Mehdi Army militiamen on Tuesday on suspicion they were part of a team that plants roadside bombs in the area.

Witnesses in Nasiriya, 375 km (235 miles) south of Baghdad, said the clashes began before dawn. Fighting eased by noon after the militias withdrew from the city's centre.

Iraq's Shi'ite south has seen less violence than in Baghdad and other areas, but fighting between rival Shi'ite factions and security forces erupts from time to time.

(RTTNews) - A suspected chlorine bomb attack on Tuesday in an open-air market in the village of Abu Sayda in Iraq's Diyala province has killed 20 people and 50 others were reported to have been injured, Iraqi police said on Wednesday.

Doctors at a local hospital suspected the use of poison gas given the nature of victims' burns, according to a police spokesman in the provincial capital Baquba.

BAGHDAD - A parked car bomb has exploded in a Shiite enclave northeast of Baghdad, killing at least 32 people and wounding 50, police said Wednesday.

The attack occurred near an outside market about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in the village of Abu Saydah in the volatile Diyala province, local police said, giving the casualty toll.

BAGHDAD - A parked car bomb exploded near a market in a Shiite enclave northeast of the capital, killing at least 32 people and wounding 50, police said Wednesday. Hospital officials and wounded victims said chlorine gas may have been used in the attack, but police denied that.

Thousands of U.S. forces continued to search for three American soldiers feared captured by al-Qaida last week after an attack on their convoy south of Baghdad also killed four U.S. troops and an Iraqi soldier.

Meanwhile, clashes broke out in the mostly Shiite city of Nasiriyah in southern Iraq on Wednesday, when a militia fought with police there after they arrested two wanted militia members, police said. Nine Iraqis were killed and 75 wounded, a police spokesman said.

A U.S. government report released Tuesday showed that the recent U.S. troop increase and security crackdown has had little effect on the high number of attacks in the country.

At 6 p.m. Wednesday, about 10 gunmen hijacked a bus in Baqouba that was traveling from Baghdad to Kirkuk in northern Iraq, police said. The attackers took 20 women and an unknown number of children off the vehicle, then left with 23 male passengers as hostages, apparently heading toward a nearby al-Qaida in Iraq stronghold, police said.

An apparently coordinated attack by five suicide car bombers and scores of militants backed by mortars and bombs killed four policemen in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Wednesday night and injured 30 other people, including 14 police officers, police said.

The attacks began after 7 p.m., when two suicide bombers detonated car bombs near the police station in Mosul, 225 miles northwest of Baghdad.

Another two suicide car bombers blew up near the headquarters of the Democratic Party of Kurdistan in another area of town, said Wathiq al-Hamdani, provincial chief of police
