Updated: 1:14 p.m. ET Dec. 24, 2003BAGHDAD, Iraq - A powerful explosion rocked central Baghdad on Wednesday night, moments after a rocket-propelled grenade was fired at the Sheraton hotel, where many Westerners stay. A U.S. military spokesman told NBC News that the grenade missed the hotel and that the blast was caused by an ongoing military operation nearby by U.S. forces.


Earlier Wednesday, a roadside bomb exploded north of Baghdad, killing three American soldiers, the U.S. military said. Elsewhere, a suicide car bomb attack in the Kurdish city of Irbil in northern Iraq killed five people including the bomber, and a roadside bomb killed one civilian in Baghdad.
