Cheney sees Arab support on Iraq by Olivier Knox
42 minutes ago

SHANNON, Ireland (AFP) - US Vice President Dick Cheney, wrapping up a week-long visit to the Middle East, said Monday that he had won support from his Arab hosts for US efforts to stabilize war-torn Iraq.

Cheney, speaking aboard his Air Force Two airplane after leaving Jordan, also said that their backing was not contingent on making progress on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process -- though doing so is a key US goal.

"I do not think it's everything or nothing. I do believe there are a number of issues that need to be worked on simultaneously. You don't get to pick and choose," the vice president told reporters.

"I think these are all important issues, and we need to work on all of them," said Cheney, whose trip began with a two-day surprise trip to Iraq, then stops in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan.

Asked whether he had won his Arab hosts' support for US efforts to stabilize Iraq, Cheney replied: "I did." He declined to offer further details.

4. Well, duh.
It certainly is in the region's best interests to have stability. So when is Saudi Arabia planning on sending in troops?

6. cheney is not to be believed- he is not reputable
Why he is the one that said the insurgency was in the "last throes".

Just a bit of spin from the Head Spin Master- well, maybe next to Rove.

11. I'm sure the majority of Iraqis don't want Saudi involved
But the Sunni population would probably want Saudi involved.

13. thats a problem...but i think they will understand that soon
Not all the sunni
mostly those who liked Saddam
you see this Sunni-Shiaa thing came outside Iraq. in Iraq we lived together but after the war begin, there were a lot of arabs who came from Iran,Saudi, Jordan and Syria (a lot)
they have that sunni-shia war and they began revenge, and the iraqi people have to pay.
its not only the sunni who decide in Iraq, is the Iraqis.
But i think the Iraqi people have to understand that no arab country can help us.
we have i proverb in iraq who say: "If the people wanted something, then it must happen some day"
so i think if the Iraqi people wanted peace they will get it, but they have to believe in it.

10. Allow me to use a strained metaphor: you're at a zoo
Analogical meanings are glossed below.

And you have a rocket launcher. You use that rocket launcher to blow open the cages that have the lions*, the pumas**, the grizzly bears***, and the cloned velociraptors****. The people around you***** are really pissed that you have set those things free, but you're the only person with a rocket launcher that can take out a lion so they pretty much do what you say, while trying to come up with a way to get the rocket launcher from you.

That's the kind of "support" we have.

Glossary:
* Iran
** Al Qaeda
*** Kurdish separatism
**** I just like velociraptors
***** "moderate" Arab regimes

12. Arab support on Iraq--as in what, specifically?
Are they going to ramp up production to keep gas prices low? No, they already did that, and prices are high anyway. Presumably this means what, they will send arms to Sunnis in Iraq? Oh, that will help. They aren't going to do anything to aid the current regime.

A vague promise of Arab support on Iraq from Cheney, at this point, means exactly nothing, other than to raise the suspicion that the Arab countries of the region are going to do the opposite.

14. Cheney said "I did"
but declined to offer more details.

I read in another article over the weekend, that Cheney got nowhere with his trip to the Middle East. He went to Iraq to a) plead with the government not to take a 2-month vacation. I don't know if he pursuaded them to stay home.
Then, he went to b) Saudi Arabia to beg for help with Iraq.

The main reasons for going over there is because the Repubs are falling apart here in the US. The Americans'
