“A lot of people are asking, ‘How does it compare to 1993?’ The answer is, ‘It pales in comparison to 1993, but it’s still a very significant flood event.’ ”
Andy Bailey of the National Weather Service

Evacuations. Water rescues. Barricaded roads. Flooded basements. Sandbags.

Those were the facts of life for many people around the Kansas City region Monday as rains of at least 4 inches — more than 7 inches in some areas — caused rapid swelling of the Missouri River, its tributaries and other streams.

For some, it could get worse: Officials expecting additional rainfall overnight and today predicted that the Missouri River would hit the second-highest flood stage levels on record at cities upstream of Kansas City.

While the Kansas City area is expected to be spared the brunt of the flooding, areas around St. Joseph in Missouri and Elwood on the Kansas side could be hit hard today as flood stages approach readings not seen in more than a decade.

aviation pilot, and we had taken our kids and flown on a trip to GA to visit
his sister, with stop at Chattanooga on way back (boys were train crazy in those days). When we flew into the airport, the road from the airport to the main highway was sandbagged holding back at least a foot or more of water in places. There was a pilot waiting to fly our plane out to high ground after we landed. About an hour and half after we got home, the levees were breached
and the airport was underwater!

The water treatment plant in St. Joseph was flooded, and the huge pumps
that pumped water had to be airlifted out by helicopter and taken to
KC to be dried out. We were without water for almost a week.
We had a pool, and we used water from that for washing dishes, flushing toilets, etc. One time my husband was carting water from the pool to the kitchen door using our tractor, and he left the pool gate open. We heard a splash, and ran to the pool. Our 3 year old had fallen in, and his older brother was standing there laughing at him! No harm, as the one who fell in came quickly to the surface and reached for side of the pool.

I'll never forget that summer!
