Goodling Shed Tears Before Revelations About Firings (Update1)
Source: Bloomberg

By James Rowley

May 4 (Bloomberg) -- A former U.S. Justice Department official and central figure in the firing of eight U.S. attorneys tearfully told a colleague two months ago her government career probably was over as the matter was about to erupt into a political storm, according to closed-door congressional testimony.

Monica Goodling, at the time an aide to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, sobbed for 45 minutes in the office of career Justice Department official David Margolis on March 8 as she related her fears that she would have to quit, according to congressional aides briefed on Margolis's private testimony to House and Senate investigators. The aides spoke on condition of anonymity.

Margolis's description of the emotional scene in his office sheds new light on divisions that were developing in the Justice Department's Washington headquarters as the Democratic-controlled Congress was demanding documents that might show White House involvement in the dismissals.

Goodling, 33, who was Gonzales's White House liaison, resigned April 6 and has invoked her Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination to refuse to answer lawmakers' questions about her role in the firings. Her lawyers cited accusations by Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty that Goodling and others had misled him about the firings as a basis for refusing to testify.

I am not happy she was crying. I am pissed.

She set up the Justice System to favor GOPers and to punish everyone who is not a GOPer. She was crying like a spoiled Britney Spears-like doll saying "I am one of the Elite GOPers, this isn't supposed to be happening to MEEEE."

All the good people working like crazy for the last six years trying to get a fair election and this sleaze was a main player in gaming the system to select GOPers.

20. Alexander Butterfield where are you?
Monica, of course, lacks the integrity and honesty -- and ability, and education -- of Butterfield. But she could do for Bush what Alex did for Nixon.

And while no law firm (reputable or disreputable) would hire her, maybe she can write a sleezy tell-all memoir about Gonzalez's DOJ, naming names, describing encounters, abhoring salacious tristes which she recounts in sizzling detail. ;-)

Few people give Alexander Butterfield the recognition he should have for bringing down Tricky Dick. I watched the hearings live on my old b & w TV back when Fred Thompson still had hair. It was riveting. He was a class act in the end.

And I think you're right about there being another Monica memoir in the future. Maybe even a made-for-tv movie. ABC can run it during sweeps right before the 2008 election and try to spin it. Like they did with Path To 911.:puke:

11. This charge is absurd! Monica is a CHRISTIAN for goodness' sake.
Goodling graduated from a fundamentalist Christian college and a fundamentalist Christian law school (Pat Robertson's) and is herself a fundamentalist Christian.

And as we all know, fundamentalist Christians do not commit political crimes because it would make Jesus cry -- and violate the pledge to trust in God that the conservative Republicans insist we all endorse when we use money.

Why, to believe Goodling would intentionally violate the laws she was sworn to uphold is about as likely as doubting that George W. Bush's favorite political philosopher is Jesus Christ -- and we know from W's works that that can't be true.

44. christianity = ethical behavior?
heh heh heh. How many times does the US population need to see the exact opposite, before they realize that that equation is false?

Oh, no. I just realized something. They put the same amount of belief in that odd, awkward, pointless, and inept act they call "prayer". And seeing how well prayer works, in the face of tornados, hurricanes, himacanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, asteroid hits, red sea swarms, bee hive deaths, and more, the xtian right will never take that logical step and realize that their make believe faith based in christianity has nothing to do with ethical behavior, morality, honesty or truth. and it never has.

47. Didn't she KNOW what she was doing was illegal? Or did she think it just didn't APPLY to Bushies?
I really have quite a few questions that I hope will be answered while the House of Bush comes crashing down.

One is, does Regent U. educate its grads so poorly that they really can't distinguish what's unConstitutional, illegal, and unethical under United States law?

Do they think all they have to do is pass the bar and then just go on with whatever their radical clerics tell them is God's Holy Plan?

Do they think that with Bush in power and their cohorts seeded throughout the government, that somehow the laws of this NATION just don't apply to THEM? Because what they are doing is part of the Divine Plan?

Did Ms. Goodling just suddenly wake up one day and realize that she really will go to jail, and that her professional life is over? And that SHE is responsible for that debacle? That would certainly lead to fits of weeping.

I can't figure out if she was just a naive tool, or if she was a willing architect of destruction.

Whatever the case -- please, PLEASE make an example of her.

Hekate

64. But here's the big story in that Bloomberg article:
Three hours before Goodling visited his fourth-floor office, Margolis told House and Senate investigators that Sampson dropped by to say he had information Margolis needed to know, one congressional aide said.

Margolis recounted that Sampson read his e-mail exchanges with White House aides that showed the decisions on firing the prosecutors were closely coordinated with members of the president's staff, the aide said.

(snip)

Margolis recalled that he was stunned to learn the extent of White House involvement in the dismissals, congressional aides said. Margolis testified that preparation for McNulty's Senate testimony -- which took place more than a month before his meetings with Goodling and Sampson -- was based on the assumption that the White House only became involved at the end of the firing process, the aide said.
(Emphasis mine)

Oopsie. Not sure if McNulty knew, but Sampson surely did. Which means perjury.

Rove helped Justice official on Gonzales testimony
Saw deputy AG before House panel appearance
By James Rowley and Robert Schmidt, Bloomberg News | May 5, 2007

WASHINGTON -- The White House has confirmed that President Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, helped prepare a senior Justice Department official for his testimony on the firing of US attorneys.

William Moschella, the principal deputy attorney general, told Congress on March 6 that the White House had limited involvement in the firings, a statement contradicted a week later by e-mails the Justice Department gave Congress.

Rove was among a group of presidential aides who met with Moschella the night before his testimony to the House Judiciary Committee, said Dana Perino, a White House spokeswoman. She took issue with a description of the meeting, first reported May 3 on Newsweek magazine's website, that White House officials gathered to "coach" Moschella.

"The way you're describing it in terms of coordinating some sort of message was not the case," Perino told reporters. White House officials were encouraging the Justice Department "to make sure that all the information got out quickly" to lawmakers "so that we could move on from that story," she said.

65. I want this fragile stem under oath.
I want her mercilessly grilled.

I want her sobs ignored by the Committee.

I want answers from her under threat of Federal prison time.

SHE is a weak link; press her past her breaking point and do it under oath, in public, on the record. It would be pathetic to watch, but would result in leads as yet unknown.

69. Bummer, you Little Bo Peep opportunist; where's Jesus when you really need him?
This is disgusting. This person relied on her religious affiliation to get a fast-track to riches and power. If she didn't realize that what she was doing was EXTREMELY wrong, then she has no morals, and if she only caved when she found out that she might be found out, then she is a liar of the soul, regardless of whether she was willing to live up to her societal obligation and be a liar on record.

This is sickening. She's no victim, she's a selfish user caught in her own web of fantasy and privilege. The tears are tears of drama and narcissism.

At least it's good to know that one of the godbots groomed by the reactionaries is a wash-out. Her career is over, and well it should be: if one is going to suck up to power, one has to stand fast in front of the backlash; she's shown her true mettle, and it's simply not up to snuff.

On the other hand, as a bleeding-heart liberal, I feel sorry for someone so carefully coddled to be a dependable functionary for the lying forces of ugliness getting caught in a web of deceit and abandoned by those who used her so well. Religion is the cosmic trump card, and too many feel that if you just smile, sing and bat your eyes adoringly you are owed the keys to the earthly kingdom. This is pure crap and an extreme form of privilege: being "better" than others releases you from any social obligations and grants you untold riches and power.

Real reactionaries don't cry, they smile while others do.
