Suspicious package sent to Edwards (white powder)
Source: Associated Press (Via News 14 Carolina)

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Postal employees in Chapel Hill intercepted a package Thursday addressed to Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards after they found the letter contained a powdery substance, authorities said.

Brian Curran, Chapel Hill's interim police chief, said the package is awaiting testing.

"We do not believe that the public is in any danger," Curran said in a statement.

It's the second package with a powdery substance that has been mailed to the Edwards campaign. Campaign staffers had to evacuated their Chapel Hill office in March after an employee opened a package that contained a powdery substance and negative comments.

Police found that the powdery substance in the first package was negative for anthrax. The FBI has an open investigation to determine the source.

1. Ever notice how Repukes never get such mailings?
Amazing coincidence, it's always Dems on the receiving end of these scare tactics.

Would you say someone Over There is getting worried that Edwards might just win this thing...?

11. This is what happens when investigations are "closed down" due to...well...
...just what did close down the investigations into the anthrax-mailings to Daschle and Leahy? It appeared the investigation was focusing on one particular lab when--proof--it came to an abrupt halt.

2001 anthrax attacks

Anyway, regardless of the reasons, this is what happens when you let the bad guys go...

12. And of course Leahy and Daschle were the decision makers on the Patriot Act at the time...
... when it was being debated. Leahy, as chairman of the Judiciary Committee where the bill was being debated, and Daschle who led the opposition to the original bill as Senate Majority Leader.

Hmm... Too many coincidences to me.

31. Yes, it never happens
I'm sorry, but this is a clear cut issue. We're the good guys, and they are the bad ones. A generalization? Perhaps. But the extreme right has a philosophy of the means justifying the ends.

To borrow the Boy King's statement -- you are either with us or against us. If you are on the extreme right, you are against the Constitution and for all it stands for. And breaking the law is okay, as long as you're a Republic party member.

36. The Ends Justify The Means
This is a thought-pattern that seems common to fascists everywhere. Even the fascists that are too afraid to commit such acts have no problem urging their friends on (Ann Coulter, Pat Robertson, etc). The candidates on both sides are aware of this tendancy, but they both have to pretend it isn't there. The GOP *IS* America's fascist party.

But you're right. They claim what Christians they are, and then do the most anti-Christian thing possible to win votes. They will do anything, ANYTHING to win elections. And yes, I'll put my tin-foil hat on and state that I believe they will kill to get or maintain power.

20. It's Not A Terrorist Act
don't you remember what Ashcroft's attitude was in 2001 when the Planned Parenthood clinics received the suspicious white powder that turned out to be harmless?

Since it wasn't really anthrax, it wasn't terrorism.

SO, the attitude of this administration seems to be if it isn't really anthrax and doesn't affect them or their friends, it isn't terrorism.

I remember very well, though, the poor bastard at American Media who bought it.

All the "liberal media" fuckheads were all "they were only attacked because of the word American in their name!" Shit, man, if you're going to attack an American news outlet, everyone in the world knows the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times and the Washington Post. Everyone knows the Enquirer, too, but the company that prints it isn't exactly a household word.

AND EVERY OTHER FUCKING COOKIE-CUTTER PIECE OF SHIT HATE MONGER ON THE RIGHT THAT MAKES A QUICK BUCK SHOVELING SHIT INTO THE MOUTHS OF THE FREEPERS.

This is what happens when, instead of debating your political opponents, you accuse them of treason, sedition, communism, hating A-Murika and supporting terrorism.

This is what happens Rush when you say "the left is the biggest threat to America".

Fuck all you pieces of maggot covered dog-shit. You've turned our political discourse into this.

I'm sure when the catch the prick who sent this, he'll say he was doing it to "save America", because the right-wing told him so.

I do think THEY want HILLARY CLINTON so they can do the Super-Duper PILE-ON, but I'd bet from what I hear down in this state (Florida) that Edwards is the one they think they are going to have to contend with.

BUT, it is early yet... AND WE HERE at DU could "kill" Edwards ourselves!!!

40. I Agree Completely... Not Too Extreme & Palatable To The SOUTH!
I, myself am pretty LIBERAL but am looking at elect-ability over-all! I've lived in the SOUTH since (well a very long time) geez, I'm 60 and came back from Germany at the age of 11 when my father got stationed to Ft. Hood, TX, so I think I have "some" perspective here. I go back for Class Reunions at Killeen, TX and most of my "buddies" are Moran Bushies! BUT NOT ALL!

So, regardless of how many negative "flames" we see here at DU when it comes to Edwards, I make it a point to do some canvassing here in FL. Of course, many don't think FL is considered as Southern as some states are, but where I live... well.... it's PRETTY RED!

Think Cruella, and you KNOW where I live!! She WAS, WAS, WAS... my Congressional Representative! I'm very active in local politics and a lot of people who were supporting Hillary Clinton have been peeling away, some are still sitting, but we shall see.

Regardless, WE HAVE THE BETTER CANDIDATES THIS TIME AROUND!! Felt a need to add that because I don't really want to "dis" OUR candidates very much. In my day, Democrats were known for being the Party of The Big Tent... I have had some dubious and strange thoughts about it lately... but my ups and downs get on an even plane eventually!

52. Thanks... And We Are Very Like-Minded Here!
I've often wondered what I would really do if Gore jumped in. Once, I would have defected instantly, but now I'm wondering. Gore SHOULD be out fighting by now, as CLARK should be.

But maybe they are COUNTING on "burn-out" and will jump in when they feel it's time to "light a fire" and just thinking these thoughts makes me wonder about the word "fickle" and I myself KNOW I fall for some of it too!

On the one hand, I try to stay up to date, but on the other I KNOW my heart yearns for the pure "activism" I once knew!

I wonder how high this shit goes. Is it the "lone gunman" or is it a semi-grand conspiracy involving high ranking government officials and/or businessmen who are looking to send a message to Edwards regarding his diminishing war support? I also wonder what kinds of messages, if any, have been sent to Reid and Pelosi to make them change their tunnes so abruptly.

46. Don't let em scare ya JOHN & BARACK
You are both feared by the Repubs, they so desire a Hillary run, God bless her. But I feel they have the best chance, even though Barack is part black, and you'd think that'd cause some problems with votes in Florida, Michigan, Arkansas, Nevada, etc, and sure, it will, but it will inspire MORE people to vote I believe.

I am still behind Edwards 100%, however, and I feel they FEAR him so much that people like Coultergeist, O'Lielly, and others either attack him beyond reason or try to dismiss him as pretty, or a sissy, or not in the same league as Hillary or Obama to try and get rid of the strongest "white male" candidate, because that's what they believe is the only way to win - how many men of my persuasion (the skin color persuasion, ha) were on their debate, like TEN! We had African American, Hispanic, Female, Caucasian and I'm sure other unique qualities they could only dream about!

So these SOB's who do this shit are only making these candidates more protected and well known.

And is that Kennedy quote for real? Where's it from?

53. Edwards is the least likely target of a spontaneous "lone crazy" mailing. Here is why.
What about the "love your neighbor message" angers the right wing rank and file so much?Edwards is most "Christian" of the Democratic contenders by far. His emphasis on disparities and poverty and bringing the focus away from foreign war and back to domestic problems makes him sound like a Sunday school teacher sometimes, especially with that deep Southern accent.

I can see the Republican Party being angered by this. Do they think he would peel away their base if he was in the general election? Do they think that it is unfair that he is stepping on their turf?

However, the guys in suits in the Republican Party are not the same as the rank and file at home.
I doubt that these mailings are the work of lone crazies. I can not see lone crazies attacking John Edwards or being angered by what he says or who he is (a white Christrian rich guy with a wife with terminal cancer). The guy has a low negative profile compared to Hillary and Obama. That means that rank and file Republicans and Independents are not worried by him.

I can see Republican operatives organizing a calculated plan to make it look as if it is too dangerous to Edwards and his family to stay in the race. I can also see AGAG's DOJ ignoring the campaign of intimidation.

56. McCamy, Agreed!
Edwards plans and principles for the needy and absolute destitute through healthcare and protecting workers' rights is the most "Christian", and they are threatened by him b/c they (RNC) know he will do very well in toss-up states.

Read this ---
"Obama and Clinton are the frontrunners, but Edwards does best in general election match-ups. He leads all GOP hopefuls and is the only Democrat to lead the Republican frontrunner, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (see match-ups and favorability ratings for all Democratic candidates."

57. Can you imagine if this had been sent to say, Rumsfeld? Or
Cheney?

We'd have the culprit in no time, shuffled off to some undisclosed location, under "anti-terrorism" statutes, never to be heard from again, but with much hoopla.

These attacks against Dems keep happening, and it's "yawn, another day, another powder-filled envelope. No biggie. Go about your business".

58. Republicans want Edwards out of the race as quickly as possible...
Edited on Fri May-04-07 04:00 PM by LaPera
The republican owned mainstream corporate media keeps throwing Hillary and Obama down our throats day after day...those are the candidates the republicans want us to choose to be the democratic nominee for president, certainly NOT John Edwards...

Edwards is a progressive, he has an excellent social & economic platform as well as a coherent liberal foreign policy... Edwards is also a very seasoned and skilled politician, Edwards is very charismatic and extremely smart, and the dude has the good looks, as well as being a liberal, Edwards is a fighter!

Surely the republicans do NOT want Edwards to be the democratic nominee, one can see planted stories about Edwards every week, republicans hoping one of the stories will take and ruin Edwards and hopefully get Edwards out of the race as quickly as possible or at the very least, severely damage Edwards chances.

Not so fast republicans, you lying greedy sick assholes...Edwards is a fighter!!:kick:

60. The Irony of Dems being targeted
Gee, and according to all the neocons, including a bunch from last night's debate, the "Terrists" love the Democrats and hope they win. If that were true, and all these Islamic jihadists really gave a rat's ass about our political climate, don't you think it would be the Republicans at the receiving end of this kind of stuff?

Of course, it almost always turns out to be a phony prank played out by some right-wing idiot just to scare people. Wait a minute... wouldn't that, by definition, make them terrorists? Hmm...

68. Post your 90-second profile here.
Here's mine: White male, overweight, glasses; lives in parents' basement. Works in the kitchen at Sizzler in Twin Falls, Idaho. Drives a sky blue 1978 Ford F-150 with a tomato can welded onto his rusting exhaust and a busted tailgate. Neighbors say he's quiet, but seems like an okay guy.
