Bush Warns of Vetoes Over Abortion Issue
Source: New York Times

Published: May 4, 2007
WASHINGTON, May 3 — President Bush told Congressional leaders Thursday that he would veto any legislation that weakened federal policies or laws on abortion.

In a two-page letter sent to the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, Mr. Bush said his veto threat would apply to any measures that “allow taxpayer dollars to be used for the destruction of human life.”

~snip~

For example, a provision is under consideration for a foreign appropriations bill that would end a ban on discussing abortion in family planning clinics in developing nations.

Brendan Daly, a spokesman for Ms. Pelosi, said she interpreted the president’s letter as a broader threat “to veto any pro-choice legislation.”

“Instead of trying to work with Congress he’s trying to threaten Congress, and that won’t work,” he said.

Tony Fratto, a White House spokesman, said: “The president felt that it was important to remind Congress of his position on these issues. It’s not about vetoing, it’s about standing firm on his core beliefs.”

and abolish the death penalty. Right. What a sicko. We'll provide universal health care, so that people don't die for lack of insurance. I could go on and on, but it's too nauseating to continue.

9. The Republican Party...
...cares about life very strongly. From conception to birth, and then again after death up unto the Resurrection. Everything in between? Not so much. Just witness the litmus test applied to their candidates, and how quickly those sorry saps have flip-flopped to satisfy the rabidly insane right wing.

Every-time chucklnuts threatens a veto, the Congress should send it right up the street. His credibility, at record lows now, would errode even further.

Bush warns Dems not to introduce abortion-rights bill

By JIM ABRAMS
Associated Press

WASHINGTON — President Bush is warning Democratic leaders that any attempt to weaken federal policies that restrict abortion will be met with a veto.

White House deputy press secretary Tony Fratto said today that the warning, issued in letters to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, was intended to stop abortion amendments from being added to spending bills and other legislation that Congress will be considering in the coming weeks.

"There's nothing specific pending right now," Fratto said.

The Republicans who held power in past sessions of Congress ensured that spending bills included language prohibiting federal funding for abortion except to save the life of the mother or in cases of rape or incest, and restricting funding for international family planning groups that might give advice on or provide abortions.

24. This is all crap IMO, this issue should be left up to the doctor and...
expectant mother to decide what is best for them. If it must be, then it should be at a State Judicial level at worst case. Keep the politicians out of this all together.
Now I realize that it has already gone to the US Suppreme court with Row vs Wade and abortion was upheld, and should not be overturned. The damn right wing are such hipocrytes though, the Death penalty is ok, but not abortion... duh..

29. well, but what happens when it isn't? Should attempts to make it NOT so be ignored?
the theoretical bill the article is talking about would prevent restrictions that make it NOT up to a woman and her doctor by adding those restrictions to completely unrelated bills. How is that crap?

26. Does anyone else ever get the idea that Bush's stance on abortion
just might be connected to maintaining a constant supply of cheap labor. That seemed to be the purpose of the Global Gag Order, his first official act, that cut off funding for International Planned Parenthood.

30. No, because it won't stop abortion. Just safe abortion.
His stance is cynical red meat for the base that won't affect his life at all. Anyone in his family that needs an abortion (or should I say "appendectomy") will still be able to get one.

42. I like this
They are forcing Bush and republic policy and its supporters to come out of the dark. They are showing America that Bush does not agree with at least 70% of you. He did not veto for 6 years, just signing statements, that faded away quietly. Make him veto bills that most Americans are for. Do you think the Ronnie Reagan love fest on Thursday night happened only because it was in his library? They can't agree with Bush and expect to win, yet they can't run on anything else but him and expect to survive in that party. They have to make it out of the primary if they expect to run in the general election. Just my opinion.
