Republicans against amendment for Schwarzenegger
Source: Reuters

SIMI VALLEY, Calif, May 3 (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidates terminated any presidential aspirations the Terminator may have had.

The 10 candidates were asked in their Thursday night debate if they would support amending the Constitution to allow fellow Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former bodybuilder and action movie star, to run for U.S. president.

"Intimidating as he might be, I'm saying 'no,'" said U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado.

The U.S. Constitution allows only natural-born citizens to seek the highest office in the country. But some supporters of California's Austrian-born governor have been pushing to change that so he could possibly join the 2008 race.

With Schwarzenegger looking on from the audience at the first Republican presidential debate of the campaign, the 10 declared Republican hopefuls were overwhelmingly against a constitutional amendment.

1. If they get rid of term limits he is running again
Edited on Thu May-03-07 11:39 PM by jamesinca
If they do not get rid of term limits it is suspected he will run against Barbara Boxer. Arnold has political ambition that does not stop with his second term.

5. Term limits in CA
That will be on the February ballot in the primary. The timing on this is important, if it passes in February then all of the incumbants that would be termed out will be able to run in the June election as the party nominee. If it does not pass then the state assembly and senate will have to get people to run for the terming out people.

This is not a federal thing, it is a CA thing, but it will determine if Arnold runs for the Senate or another term as governor.

A federal constitutional amendment will take a lot longer and I think Arnold will be to old by the time that one got all of the needed hurdles cleared.

6. No....go ahead and remove him....The Big Dog has 20 good years left easy
Think about that. Who would win in - Shrub or Bill Clinton?

HA HA HA

They nixed Arnold for a different reason....He's a threat to their party by showing that allegiance to an agenda of ignorance and hate is not essential for a Repuke to 'succeed' in office.

2. Pandering bastards
Pandering to xenophobes. Not that I expect anything else from such a gang.

Schwarzenegger is irrelevant in this matter. That provision of the Constitution is an abomination.

9. Yes, he does
But I don't think he'll ever run for the Senate.

12. If thats the case, then CA
is in worse shape than I thought. To "elect" him as governor is enough, but to have him defeat Barb in a senate race would be too much to bear

13. Sorry to have to say it but he was elected fair and square
The fact that he won says a lot more about poor decision-making processes in the Democratic Party here than about what kind of shape the state is in.

8. The 63rd Amendment, to be precise
And here is a gratuitous cheesecake picture of Sandra Bullock in honor of her fine performance in Demolition Man.

10. It was the low point of the debate
Edited on Fri May-04-07 12:32 PM by rocknation
It should have ocurred to Tweety that the answers might prove to be embarrassing to Arnold. But he just couldn't step back and let the debaters be the stars of the show! By the way, is it true that Arnold has yet to relenquish his Austrian citizenship?

11. 2008?
Fer or agin it, there's no chance whatsoever that the a constitutional amendment could get through both houses of congress, particularly when it's such an obvious attempt to get him eligible, and then to get the amendment ratified by 38 state legislatures in time for Ah-nold to run in 2008.
