US to help probe wheat gluten: China
Source: Zee News India

Beijing, April 26: China said Thursday that it had invited U.S. inspectors to help in an investigation looking at possible contaminated food exports in the wake of the pet food scare in the United States.

Officials from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will visit, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao.

The United States has said that wheat gluten contaminated with melamine was exported to the U.S. from China and was used in pet food that has been linked to the deaths of more than a dozen cats and dogs in the United States.

"The U.S. reported finding melamine in pet food. China attaches great importance to this case. The USFDA wants to send officials to China to exchange ideas and consult on inspection techniques. China will cooperate on this," Liu said.

2. Why doesn't this instill confidence?
The FDA, who has dropped the ball on several food illness outbreaks in the U.S. recently, is going to go over to investigate.

They might as well start a circle jerk.

4. It sounds so eerily certain...

that contamination happened before exporting from China. Have we really ruled out contamination happening en route or inside the US ?

5. I think that part has been established, & China unfortunately has a history with food poisonings
I wish I'd saved the link, but apparently over the past generation there have been several cases of business rivals in the food industry poisoning someone else's product to ruin their business. As far as I know it was on a small scale -- but basically we don't do that particular crime here, and it has happened several times there.

In this case, the chemical was added to beef up the apparent protein content, without regard to the toxicity of the end result. And just as I predicted at the beginning, it HAS entered the human food chain in the US. :-(

Crappy "free trade" comes at a very high price, once again.

6. Sounds like "run-off"
It seems to me that if we can admit to problems in the food supply chain, then we also have to not dismiss other issues like ground water contamination, greenhouse gases, etc. We're sitting in our own shit

Thanks for the info, Hekate.
