Impeachment resolution draws chants from protestors

By Jerry Cornfield
Herald Writer

OLYMPIA - Protesters chanted "Impeach, impeach" and yelled "Do your job" at state senators Thursday after the Democratic majority balked at acting on resolutions seeking impeachment of President Bush and an end to the war in Iraq.

The outburst followed speeches by two Democrats opposed to the war and the president's leadership and one Republican saying the state Legislature was not the venue for the discussion.

Sen. Eric Oemig, D-Kirkland, spoke first Thursday. He is the author of a pro-impeachment resolution that did not reach the floor for a vote. He said to avert more deaths, the war must be ended and "the commander in chief must be relieved of duty."

- snip -

Republicans wondered if the Democrats, who hold the majority in both houses, would bring forward Oemig's resolution. Democrats spent nearly three hours behind closed doors Wednesday unable to unite behind that or any other proposal.

1. It is so frustrating when the Democrats back down
I'd be out there shouting "Do your job" too. Way to go, Washington State. On April 28 all over the country we are waging demonstrations to show Congress that we want the criminal administration impeached. I hope someone in Congress "Does their job" and puts it back on the table.

4. I'll kick this, too! This kind of thing is EXACTLY what we need.
Even if it fails. The Vermont State Senate, I believe, has voted yes on their own IMPEACHMENT resolution. It's been attempted once already in New Mexico. And a bunch of other states as well. This is all part of the momentum-building, guys. Even if these measures fail (AT FIRST), the very fact that they're coming up for discussion, and better yet GETTING SOME NEWS COVERAGE, is a victory in and of itself. This is WAY cool.

It starts with a murmur. And builds to a ROAR. I think we've gone beyond the murmur stage by now, with stuff like this.

:toast:

BTW, I REALLY like that phrase saying the war must be stopped AND "the commander-in-chief must be relieved of duty." THAT may actually be what it takes to stop the war. So be it, then.

7. I'm with you, Calimary! I'm very encouraged by these actions. Think of where we were 2 years ago
Climbing this mountain takes time, and patience and persistence. We have suffered a fascist coup, and we are trying to reverse it by those democratic means that are still working, more or less. This is not an easy task. It is not an easy task working with a Democratic Party leadership that is ALSO shaped by Diebold/ES&S and their 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY vote counting code. It is not an easy task dislodging the most corrupt and criminal regime in our history, and possibly in the history of the world. We are a peaceful people. We demonstrate that every day. 75% of us want this war ended now. 56% of us opposed it from the beginning (Feb. '03). The majority of us did not want. It was shoved down our throats anyway, by people in power who DON'T CARE what we think, because they are backed by the most outrageously non-transparent vote counting scheme ever devised. And now it's becoming plainly obvious, as opposition to this unjust, illegal, heinous war has grown and grown--despite 24/7 war propaganda from the corporate news monopolies. It's very clear what the will of the people is. Everything conceivable has been done to thwart that will. And that's what we're up against now. In this situation, just getting a bill of impeachment introduced into a state legislature, and getting discussion of it, are heartening to people, and great accomplishments.

Hats off to those in Washington who have done this! And to the people of VT! And the people of NM! And all others who have tried and are trying.

The BushCon above who said it's not his duty to consider this is dead wrong. When Thomas Jefferson wrote Jefferson's Rules--the official rules of Congress--he included the power of any one legislature to submit of a bill of impeachment of the president and other federal officers to the US House, in the hope that, if Congress failed its duty, and all else failed, there would be at least one state that would act in the interests of the American people against a tyrannical executive. He also gave this power to federal grand juries. It was his failsafe against tyranny. And so, it very much IS the duty of state legislators to consider this and to act in our interests.

8. I swear I misunderstood the Thread Headline
I thought there were some Freeper protesters making trouble for our fellow citizens.
I guess the media has straightened me out. WE are the protesters.

I've grown accustomed to being in the majority in this country.
The 70% or so that thinks the Administration is corrupt, the War is built on lies,
and those responsible should be held accountable.

I'm such a freakin' Librul. :eyes:
