Kitty Carlisle Hart Dies At 96
Source: Showbuzz

Advocate For The Arts, Actress, Singer, "To Tell The Truth" Panelist
NEW YORK, April 18, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(AP) Kitty Carlisle Hart, whose long career included Broadway, opera, television, and film, including the classic Marx Brothers movie "A Night at the Opera," died after a battle with pneumonia. She was 96.

"She passed away peacefully" Tuesday night in her Manhattan apartment, said her son, director-writer-producer Christopher Hart, who was at her side. "She had such a wonderful life and a great long run. It was a blessing."

Hart was touring the country in her autobiographical one-woman show, "Here's to Life," until the pneumonia struck around Christmas, her son said. Broadway's theaters planned to dim their marquee lights Wednesday in honor of the longtime patron of the arts.

In 1991, she received the National Medal of Arts from the first President Bush. Hart's last gig was a December performance of her show in Atlanta.

David Lewis, Hart's longtime musical director, said she would be remembered "as the grande dame not only of show business but also in her philanthropy and her support for the American musical theater."

1. I thought she was about the coolest woman in the world.
I cannot recall the show, but I would sometimes get into town and see some of that teevee.

She was on it.

Some kinda show, I cannot remember the title or the tune.

But she was just beautiful...

Unattainable for this SE Texas boy.

But I could dream....

18. Busted!
I always finished my homework so I could watch "What's My Line" with the family at 9pm - I think it was Sunday night (1954). We watched it on WISH-TV Indianapolis (70 miles to the south). Sometimes when there was a cold front it would fade out and a channel from Kalamazoo would take over temporarily, and if Mom missed the mystery guest segment she was pissed.

19. No kidding. When I was a kid, I remember wondering who all these

people were on the panels on those shows, 'cause I'd never seen them do anything else. I finally figured out that they were all major Broadway figures, or writers, or columnists. Her dossier, like those of most of the others, was full of impressive credits. Married to a famous playwright... what a cool, literary, and arts-filled life!

24. That's okay; she appeared on both of them.
Along with "I've Got a Secret". :hi:

Well-known columnists, Broadway stars, and other bright lights were in rotation on most game shows then.

12. A wonderful person. She dated George Gershwin...
...and loved all people.

Here's a great profile on her from NPR:

13. Hubby interviewed her once back in the '70's
She was doing a local theater project and he was working for an entertainment paper in Columbus. He thought she was the grandest old broad(HER term, and meant with affection!) that he'd ever met--unpretentious, friendly and hilarious.

Go with the angels, Kitty.

20. I wish the GSN would bring back Black and White Overnight
It's like a time capsule from the 1950s. What I liked about watching her and Arlene Francis both was that they were so warm and so supportive of other artists. I think the versions of the shows I remember must have been later, from the 60s, but I've been watching the reruns from the 1950s the past few years and they are such a treat to watch. The stars then, especially the Broadway stars, were not just elegant and kind, their grammar and diction and eloquence were just the tops - they were witty and funny and seemed enormously intelligent.
