Donnelly, New Democrats Urge Pelosi to Seek Compromise on Iraq

William Roberts Wed Apr 18, 12:18 AM ET

April 18 (Bloomberg) -- Representative Joe Donnelly (news, bio, voting record), a freshman Democrat from Indiana, voted with his party last month to tie funding for the Iraq war to a timeline for withdrawing troops. Now, with
President George W. Bush vowing to veto the measure, Donnelly is ready to compromise.

The Democratic-controlled Congress and Bush need to ``try to find that middle place, work together, get the troops funded,'' Donnelly, 51, told constituents last week at a town- hall meeting in Logansport, Indiana. If the withdrawal timelines are waived or eliminated, he said, ``so much the better.''

Donnelly, who is among 30 House Democrats elected in districts previously held by Republicans, said Congress must avoid a showdown with the White House that will cut off funding for Iraq. While a majority of Americans now oppose the war, according to polls, the House bill setting a withdrawal date passed the House by a slim 218-212 margin.

Some new Democratic lawmakers, including Donnelly, Nancy Boyda (news, bio, voting record) of Kansas and Nick Lampson, are wary of any timeline plan that could leave them open to charges they are endangering the troops or creating greater chaos in Iraq.

2. The repukes seem to be hitting the weakest link in the Democratic congress
....by going after Representative Joe Donnelly (news, bio, voting record), the freshman Democrat from Indiana. Perhaps Donnelly should stick with the party under which he got in instead of caving on his first real issue in Washington DC. Did he run on a democratic platform in Nov. or a repuke platform?:wtf:

3. Even though everyone and their fucking horse want us out of Iraq...we must
work for a compromise, as in, we, and our troops, stay in Iraq.

5. Horsepoppy, hogwash...
My point is that I don't want to come across as a goody two shoes, but I try to avoid profanity on the www. My patience and civility are definitely being tried by people like the 3 mentioned congress people. Sellouts, traitors, what else can describe them?

9. You guys are missing it- "NEW DEMOCRATS" =DLC
Edited on Wed Apr-18-07 10:45 PM by Capn Sunshine
The DLC, or New (capital "N") Democrats , or members of the DLC, the Rightwing of the party, who enthusiastically boosted the Iraq invasion and occupation, and now urge compromise and giving.

There's still a few bucks to be made in Iraq, let's not get too hasty.

10. Screw Donnelly!
And get someone else to run against him in the primary next time.

Compromise? COMPROMISE? With BUSH?????

These people do not compromise. They have stacked the court, they have stacked the DOJ, they thought they had a lock on Congress... They led the nation into an illegal invasion and occupation of a country that had neither attacked nor threatened us, they preach endless hate against liberals, on and on it goes.

Please, please, all of you Democrats in Congress: DO NOT COMPROMISE WITH THE CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE THAT IS THE BUSH REGIME!

11. He, and the other 29 Dems
were elected because we, the people, have sickend of the Republic party's warmongering. This is what impressed me

<snip>

"Donnelly, who is among 30 House Democrats elected in districts previously held by Republicans, said Congress must avoid a showdown with the White House that will cut off funding for Iraq. While a majority of Americans now oppose the war, according to polls, the House bill setting a withdrawal date passed the House by a slim 218-212 margin"

Was his campaign run promising to avoid showdowns with the White House? Was his campaign run promising to give in to Bush and the Republic party? Somehow, I cant believe that this is the message he used to get people to vote for him. Anybody who advocated compromise, and somehow coming to an agreement with Bush and the WH, is a Republic, even if that's not the party they are publically affiliated with.

Can he be either so naive, or so stupid, as to believe that those of us who poured our hearts and hopes into getting Dems elected to Congress, did it in order to fall into line behind Republic talking points? Dear God, sometimes I wonder why we try. Then I pick myself up, and realize that there are now more of us than there are more of the timid, wavering Dems who are so afraid of Bush that they would compromise their mother's, wive's, and daughter's virtue, if it meant maintaining the status quo, if that means they have even the slightest whisper of a chance to be relected, or move up in power.

To those who make decisions based on their political careers, rather than the good of our country, I can only say "Go straight to hell, and stay there!"

13. Can't these people read polls?
Pelosi and some senior Democrats need to explain things to Joe....he's free to vote his conscience and the way he thinks his constituents want, but he can't be undermining the national strategy like this. Of course the Republican corporate media is going amp his comments as proof that Democrats are divided on this.
So friggen' depressing...

16. Here is what I said to him.....
and it was damn hard to be that polite........

http://donnelly.house.gov/

Honorable Donnelly,

The Democratic-controlled Congress and Bush don't need to find a middle ground. The Democratic-controlled Congress needs to vote for what's right for this country and our troops. Bush is the one that needs to compromise and NOT VETO.

Perhaps, you haven't been paying enough attention the last few years. Bush needs to be reigned in. He is putting our troops in harms way. Have you ever heard him define success in Iraq? Eighy percent of Iraqi's don't have proper sanitation. Seventy percent don't have clean water. What has happened to the huge amounts of money sent to Iraq?

Please reconsider your position. Compromise is a great thing when dealing with reasonable people. The Democrats have been compromised. We the people will be replacing Democrats that aren't willing to stand up. Read Lee Iaccoca's new book.
