Thompson Apologizes for Comments

Apr 16, 8:20 PM (ET)

By FREDERIC J. FROMMER

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Tommy Thompson told a Jewish group Monday that earning money is "part of the Jewish tradition," a remark for which he later apologized.

"I'm in the private sector and for the first time in my life I'm earning money," Thompson told the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. "You know that's sort of part of the Jewish tradition and I do not find anything wrong with that."

Later, he added: "I just want to clarify something because I didn't (by) any means want to infer or imply anything about Jews and finances and things. What I was referring to, ladies and gentlemen, is the accomplishments of the Jewish religion. You've been outstanding business people and I compliment you for that."

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz first reported the comments.

2. Boy, this guy is thick as a brick, isn't he? You Wisconsin folks must
have the stamina and goodhearted patience of Job and several angels to have put up with him as long as you did.

His apology, if that's what it is, is almost worse than the original remarks.

Sheesh.

9. LOL! I had heard he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but had
no idea he was this bad.

No wonder he's barely registering in the polls.

3. Open mouth, stuff foot in
Next he'll compliment a hall full of black folks on their sports ability and a hall full of native born Hispanics on their living the immigrant dream.

He's going to be fun to watch.

And he'll need to remind his supporters that women with red hair are witches.
Ya just can't be too careful out there.

You are sooo not going to be President.

Now please get off the stage so we can watch the rest of the GOP field of candidates fumble around. You really weren't that interesting.

7. On top of these verbal gaffes, Tommy Thompson doesn't seem to be
generating a lot of buzz on the trail, either.

I caught him the other night for a few minutes on C-Span. His hair dye seemed to me to be a bit overdone. It looked like he'd been bobbing for apples in deck varnish.

Newt Gingrich is ahead of him in the polls, and Newt isn't even a declared candidate. Thompson's been on the trail for weeks.

It's ain't workin', Tommy.

15. Once a Tool....
always a tool. The hair dye job is bad enough, but catch the eyebrows: about 3 shades darker than the plugs on top. Many Wisconsinites despise toxic tommy. And yeah; he is as dumb as a rock. Actually, he is dumber.

13. I think Tommy is in the race to distract from Fred and is acting as
Newt's puppet. IMO, Fred T upset some faction with his entry and popularity. Tommy T will screw everything up and hope it rubs off on Fred.

I also believe that Newt is the chosen heir.

Jewish people are also INCREDIBLY generous with that money. It is a complete urban myth that Jewish people horde money. My wife works in the non-profit sector and she can't keep up with the millions and millions pouring in from Jewish people and Jewish-run foundations to assist in a myriad of issues.

Thompson totally mis-represents the Jewish ethic even if he tries to spin it off to say "they are good business people."

In addition, my wife went to a synagogue one time and found that some of the folks there OPENLY inquired about the level of giving of other Jews. She had honestly never seen anything like it before.

I can't wait until he has to apologize for his apology, and clarify his clarifications.

No wonder that Thompson doesn't register in the polls. Thompson is so stupid even the Republicans won't nominate him for President. And that's saying a lot.
