Cheney Bets Democrats Will Back Down, Approve War-Spending Bill Without Pullout Timeline

04-15-2007 5:32 PM
By BEN FELLER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (Associated Press) -- Vice President Dick Cheney says he is "willing to bet" that Democratic lawmakers will back down and approve a war-spending bill that doesn't call for U.S. troops to leave Iraq. Top Democratic leaders shot back that Cheney has lost all public credibility.

With President Bush and Congress in a stalemate _ he plans to veto legislation that orders U.S. troops home, which the House and Senate plan to send him _ both sides are looking ahead. In an interview broadcast Sunday, Cheney predicted the Democrats will blink.

In this photo provided by CBS, Vice President Dick Cheney appears for a taping of CBS's "Face the Nation" in Washington, Saturday, April 14, 2007. The interview will be broadcast Sunday morning, April 15, 2007. (AP Photo/CBS Face the Nation, Karin Cooper)

He said Congress will end up passing a "clean" bill that funds the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan without any troop withdrawal timetables. Democrats control Congress, but they do not appear to have the votes to override a presidential veto.

"They will not leave the troops in the field without the resources they need," Cheney said of the Democrats.

2. I predict Cheney will be taking up residence in Dubai soon....
...in exile. Of course, I also predict that a battalion of Force Recon Marines will haul his sorry ass back to the U.S. to face trial if that happens.

7. I wish the Democrats
would prove him wrong on this. He's been wrong about every damn thing, batting a big fat 0. Hate to see his average go up over this one.

The Dems need to make it real clear that BushCo is getting the money if Bush just signs the bill. The only thing stopping the money is Bush. Why can't they just say that? How hard can it be to own the issue and put the whole thing back on Bunnypants. If the funding stops, IT'S BUSH'S FAULT.

This is so frustrating.

15. If Bush vetoes ...

If Bush vetoes, they should yank the timeline and insert a rollback on the tax cuts for as long as troops are deployed in Iraq.

20. Dick is right about one thing.
"They" will not leave the troops in the field without the resources they need, since "They" aren't the one's that put them there and "They" aren't the ones with the power to order a withdrawal. Once again the VP is threatening to let the troops die if the American people don't fork over another $100 billion for his oil war. What a despicable piece of shit this man is.

25. He wants us to terminate funding. That's the Bushie's only way out.
The Bushies know it's a hopeless situation.

What they want is to be able to get out and blame this catastrophic failure and the inevitable chaotic aftermath on liberals and Democrats.

Same thing they did with Vietnam. They perpetuated a false historical interpretation that continues even down to the present day that liberals and the media lost the war in Vietnam.

If the right gets away with it this time, America again will fail to learn the true lesson of this war: In the modern age of cheap weaponry, you can not impose your will on people, and force them to lick your boots, unless you are willing to commit literally millions of troops to suppress them. Is that the kind of America we want to be?
