SHREWSBURY, Vt. -- Elizabeth "Liz" Daley Jeffords, the wife of Vermont's former Republican-turned independent senator, died Friday at the age of 68.

Jeffords, who twice married former U.S. Sen. James Jeffords, suffered a reoccurence of ovarian cancer and died at the couple's Shrewsbury home, her family at her side.

Liz Jeffords was an unabashed liberal who often chafed during her husband's long career in Republican politics, even though he was widely recognized as a maverick willing to buck his party's leaders
