04/12/2007
GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP (AP) -- Gov. Jon S. Corzine was injured Thursday night in a two-car accident on the Garden State Parkway in Atlantic County, but a spokesman said his injuries were not considered life-threatening. Details on the crash, which happened shortly after 6 p.m. near milemarker 43.5 in Galloway Township, were not immediately available. "We can confirm the governor's two-car motorcade was involved in an accident tonight, and he was injured," spokesman Anthony Coley said. "His injuries are not considered life-threatening, and we are trying to determine if anyone else was injured." New Jersey 101.5 radio was reporting that Gov. Jon Corzine sustained a broken leg.
The Garden State Parkway is shut down north of Exit 38 in the area of the Atlantic City Expressway, and a medical helicopter was being dispatched to the scene.
According to the radio station, a state trooper was also in the car with Corzine, and the extent of injuries is unknown.

Sources tell WNBC.com's Brian Thompson that the crash N.J. Gov. Jon Corzine was injured in was a hit and run. A spokesman says the injuries are not considered life threatening.
Sources told WNBC.com's Brian Thompson that Corzine arrived at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, and they tell Thompson that he has an open femur fracture.
Those sources said Corzine will be put under anesthesia, and when he is, Senate President Richard Codey will take over as Acting Governor.

41. More on his injuries..("The governor does not usually wear a seat belt")
Edited on Thu Apr-12-07 10:55 PM by rainbow4321
http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=local&id=5193567

Bobby Juska of Forked River, who was on the scene of the accident, said Corzine's legs were hanging out of the window after the accident. He said, "The governor was screaming 'My leg! My leg!'"

The governor does not usually wear a seat belt, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press, but it is unknown whether he was wearing one at the time of the crash.

Corzine also had a broken sternum, a broken collarbone, a slight fracture of the lower vertebrae and six broken ribs on each side, said Dr. Steven Ross, trauma director at Cooper.

Corzine also had laceration on his head, but did not sustain any brain or spinal cord damage in the accident. Ross said Corzine would be in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition following surgery. The surgery was expected to be completed early Friday morning, Ross said.

49. The Governor's an idiot for not wearing a seatbelt
What kind of example does that set? And isn't that illegal in New Jersey?

Don't get me wrong, I hope he gets better, but now because he didn't buckle up he's worse off in a big way.

I go into my first accident six months after getting my driver's license. An Oldsmobile raced out of a parking lot and smashed into my Suzuki Samurai. The Suzuki tipped over on to the driver's side and came to a rest, the Olds was spun about 45 degrees from the direction it had been heading.

I walked away from the accident (after a brief checkup at the hospital) with a bruise on my shin and one on my chest from the seatbelt. The other driver sprained his ankle, apparently trying to his the brake just before the collision.

Lesson: wear the damn seat belt! I wear mine religiously ever since. Even when just moving the car around a parking lot I buckle up.

A compound fracture I believe means the bone is sticking out of the skin. Infection is a huge concern and it is considered a medical emergency if I remember right.

73. Wait a minute.....
He is indeed in critical condition. Fractured ribs, sternum; Gods protection of the lungs and heart...this "shield" has been broken in several sites.

He risks having post-trauma cardiac and respiratory complications which are all life threatening. Let me toss a few directions his health status may be lingering....He is post anesthesia from the repair of the fractured femur; so...he may still be on a ventilator due to the rib fractures which will cause poor ventilation and then there is the potential cardiac/lung damage. The media or the Governor's Office may not have shared this if it has happened. This is all speculation on my part now but I have seen the scenario.

He could easily die. We won't know for about 10 days as an educated guess.

38. Left leg/several ribs broke

http://c-n.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070412/FRONT01/70412030

Gov. Jon S. Corzine broke his left leg and several ribs when his
motorcade was involved in an accident on the Garden State Parkway Thursday night, but the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

A state trooper and an aide to the governor were also injured in the crash, which occurred just after 6 p.m. near milemarker 44.5 in Galloway Township, Atlantic County. All three were taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where Corzine underwent surgery performed by Dr. Robert S. Ostrum.

At the time of the crash, the governor was on his way from Atlantic City to his mansion in Princeton to take part in the meeting between radio host Don Imus and the Rutgers University women's basketball team.

During a news conference at the hospital Thursday night, state police Superintendent Rick Fuentes said the crash occurred when a red pickup truck -- which was on the right shoulder of the highway -- swerved toward the berm and came back onto highway. This caused another pickup in the right lane to swerve into the passenger side of the sport utility vehicle in which Corzine was riding.

36. Car "was teetering on a guardrail"
http://www.c-n.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070412/FRONT01/70412030

Jim Freund, a 2nd lieutenant with the Great Bay Regional EMS squad, who happened on the scene while returning from another call, said he saw Corzine, a state trooper and another unidentified victim injured.

Freund said Corzine was removed from his sports utility vehicle - which was teetering on a guardrail. "He was conscious, he was moaning," Freund said.

Corzine was in Atlantic City this afternoon at the Trump Taj Mahal to speak at the annual conference of the New Jersey Conference of Mayors. He then appeared on a radio show hosted by Pinky Kravitz of WOND 1400 AM that also broadcasts from the city.

Thank goodness he's OK...geez, just yesterday he ordered for NJ flags to be flown half staff tomorrow (Friday) for the FBI agent killed on April 5th in NJ. Any more serious of an injury and the day of mourning would have been for the Governor himself ;(

http://www.c-n.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070412/NEWS/704120313

Gov. Jon S. Corzine issued an executive order Wednesday that said flags in New Jersey should fly at half-staff Friday in honor of the FBI special agent who was shot and killed during a Readington bank stakeout gone awry.

Corzine signed the order honoring FBI Special Agent Barry Lee Bush. Bush, 52, was killed April 5 during a sting operation to nab a band of bank robbers from New Brunswick who had struck four banks, authorities said.

"Special Agent Bush's selfless devotion to public service and acts of heroism in the protection of others make him a true role model for all New Jerseyans, and therefore, it is appropriate and fitting for the state where he served as a federal peace officer to recognize his true commitment to the welfare and safety of others, to mark his untimely passing, to remember his family as they mourn their tragic loss, and to honor his memory," Corzine's order said.

Corzine and New Jersey Attorney General Stuart Rabner were to attend a viewing for Bush this morning, and U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Christopher J. Christie was to attend the funeral.

64. You're right. They both did, as well. Amazing coincidence...
<snip>
Corzine became the third New Jersey governor in eight years to suffer a broken leg. Christie Whitman fractured a leg skiing in the Alps in 1999. Three years later, her successor, James E. McGreevey, suffered a broken femur after falling during a jog on a Cape May beach.

50. Corzine on breathing tube and facing long recovery
Posted by The Star-Ledger April 13, 2007 4:51AM

The duration and distance were short, but in those dizzying seconds and feet, Gov. Jon Corzine suffered injuries serious enough to land him in intensive care with a breathing tube down his throat and a doctor declaring him lucky to be alive.

The 60-year-old governor underwent about two hours of surgery last night to repair multiple broken bones, including 12 ribs and a femur that protruded through the skin of his thigh, following a car accident on the Garden State Parkway in Galloway Township.

State Police this morning said they are still seeking the driver of a red pickup truck believed to have caused the accident.

With two of his adult children by his bedside, Corzine, sedated and on intravenous painkillers, remains in intensive care in Cooper University Hospital in Camden. He required seven pints of blood, officials said, and is using a breathing tube to ease his respiration with the broken ribs, and a broken breastbone.

54. I know. But do they know that for sure yet?
CNN said that he "may not" have been wearing one. We've been trying to figure out if he was thrown from the vehicle, since it doesn't appear to be that damaged, considering the serious injuries that he sustained... CNN just said that he's in critical condition, though his injuries aren't life threatening. But that he'll require further surgeries...;(

Thanks for the update. And I sympathize about the boorz comment. This was bound to happen, I agree, but that doesn't make it okay...:-(

62. The latest I heard was that they are still searching for the red pickup,
consider this to be a hit-and-run...:-(

<snip>
The motorcade was headed north in the left lane just past mile marker 44 when a red pickup truck entered the road from the shoulder and crossed into the path of a white Dodge Ram truck, police said.

The Dodge then swerved in front of the governor's SUV, colliding with the Tahoe and sending it careening onto the highway median and into the metal guardrail, police said.

With every officer in NJ (and probably surrounding states) looking for him/her! I read that they are hoping the highway cameras caught some video of it at/after the accident.

79. Corzine in 'a lot of pain,' faces difficult recovery
Posted by The Star-Ledger April 13, 2007 4:08PM

Gov. Jon S. Corzine was not wearing a seat belt and was sent hurtling into the back seat when his SUV tore into a guard rail along the Garden State Parkway last night, according to two people who were with the governor in the hours after the crash.

One hospital source also said Corzine is in worse condition than has been publicly acknowledged, and that he could be in a wheelchair for six months. The sources spoke on the condition they not be named out of respect to the governor.

The governor is still in "a lot of pain," his chief of staff said this afternoon. Corzine is breathing through a tube and faces more surgery in the next few days to help him recover from his injuries.

Anthony Coley, the governor's spokesman, was questioned about the seat belt issue at a press conference outside Cooper University Hospital in Camden just before lunchtime today.

Police find driver in Corzine crash, won't charge

Saturday, April 14, 2007

Associated Press

The driver of a red pickup truck accused of causing the crash that critically injured Gov. Jon Corzine will not be charged because he has unaware he had caused an accident, State Police said Saturday.

A state official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly, said the driver was a "special needs driver" who may have a mental impairment.

Acting on information obtained from the Little Egg Harbor Township Police Department, along with leads that state troopers generated from Garden State Parkway surveillance cameras and toll information, authorities found the 20-year-old driver Friday night at an Atlantic City casino, where he works, and interviewed him.

"The statement of the driver of the red Ford pickup indicates that he was unaware that he caused this accident which unfolded as the other two vehicles passed him," State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes said. "He stated that he pulled back onto the road and left the area, believing that he was not involved."

86. Does that mean a non-special needs driver would have been charged?
This story just gets stranger with every new detail. I wasn't aware that being special needs gave one a pass in causing traffic accidents. Before he got his license yanked by our state, my cousin with diabetes was given citations and once was thrown in jail when he passed out while driving due to his blood sugar level.

89. Good point...
Just because this guy wasn't aware that he caused an accident doesn't mean that he wasn't responsible, if he did. I don't get this, either. As a driver, I'd like to think that everybody else out there has to obey the rules of the road, whoever they are.

Thanks for posting this update and I agree with you. The fact that he was driving on the shoulder, and was so benighted as to have not been aware of this well-publicized accident, also leads me to believe that he should not be on the road...:eyes:
