Ohio man allegedly joined al-Qaida, eyed bombing of tourist resorts

A U.S. citizen was charged with joining al-Qaida and conspiring to bomb tourist resorts where Americans vacation in Europe and U.S. government facilities and military bases there, according to a federal indictment.

Christopher Paul, 43, of Columbus, trained with al-Qaida in the early 1990s overseas and told al-Qaida members in Pakistan and Afghanistan that he was dedicated to committing violent jihad, the indictment issued Wednesday by a federal grand jury said.

4. It's the Lyman Faris and Nuradin Abdi Columbus mall bombing "plot"
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was captured in early March 2003 in Pakistan and subsequently disappeared into the secret prison network before being transferred to Guantanamo in 2006. At the time of Mohammed's capture, the CIA had had his minor children in custody for some months, raising the question whether John Yoo's later-revealed enthusiasm for Presidential threats against children was entirely hypothetical.

Almost immediately upon Mohammed's capture, US officials raised the spectre of attacks against US infra-structure such as bridges. Allegedly based on Mohammed's interrogations, the Feds immediately approached Lyman Faris in March 2003 and rather quickly indicted him for a supposed plot to cut the cables on the Brooklyn Bridge, and after threatening to detain him as an enemy combatant, obtained a guilty plea in May 2003 and used him as a double agent briefly during the summer before in October he was sentenced to twenty years after trying unsuccesfully in September to revert to an innocent plea. It is credible that the threat of being labelled an enemy combatant had some effect on Faris, since the Padilla case had garnered some publicity since the night in June 2002 when the President ordered Padilla removed into DoD custody. In his fist conversations

In November 2003, after Faris was sentenced, federal agents arrested another person who attended the same mosque, Nuradin Abdi, and held him on immigration charges. In March 2004, an immigration judger ordered his deportation within 90 days. When the deadline expired in June 2004, Ashcroft suddenly announced that Abdi and Faris had conspired to bomb shopping malls in Columbus. Abdi is still awaiting trial on these charges.

Faris allegedly involved Abdi and Paul in the supposed Columbus mall plot in March 2003 conversations with the FBI. It is rather curious that Paul is now charged, more than four years after supposedly being named and three and a half years after the last arrest of his alleged co-conspirators.

Did Ashcroft 'Behead' an Innocent Man in an Ohio Election-terror Scam?
by Harvey Wasserman and Bob Fitrakis

On Monday, June 14, the eve of Kerry's two-day visit here, Attorney-General Ashcroft dramatically seized national headlines by unsealing a month-old four-count indictment of Abdi, a Somali native living in Columbus. "The American heartland was targeted for death and destruction by an al-Qaeda cell allegedly which included a Somali immigrant who will now face justice," Ashcroft boasted. Ashcroft failed to point out that Abdi had been in custody since November 28, 2003. Federal investigators claim Abdi allegedly bragged that he wanted to blow up a mall. But according to CBSNEWS.com, "no specific mall was targeted. No explosives were in hand. And it was unclear that the alleged terrorist had the wherewithal to do it." Abdi faces up to 80 years in prison and $1 million in fines. According to U.S. immigration records, Abdi first entered the United States in 1995, resided in Canada, then re-entered the U.S. in August 1997. Official statements say the US granted Abdi asylum as a refugee in January 1999 after Abdi gave false information to immigration officials. His November 2003 arrest was on immigration charges. He has been held in prison under extremely dubious circumstances. ~snip~

~snip~ Attorney General John D. Ashcroft said that Nuradin M. Abdi, 32, a cell phone company employee in Columbus, was charged with conspiring with al Qaeda operatives, including Ohio truck driver Iyman Faris, who was convicted last year of plotting to sever cables on the Brooklyn Bridge. A four-count indictment, unsealed yesterday in Ohio, said Abdi obtained and used fraudulent travel documents and conspired to provide material support to al Qaeda. Abdi, in custody since the day after Thanksgiving, had lost his political asylum status and was facing deportation that is now stayed by the indictment. ~snip~
