The head of the General Services Administration pushed to award a contract to Sun Microsystems even after learning that GSA’s inspector general was considering referring the company to the Justice Department over allegations of fraud, according to a senior GSA official.
In a letter responding to a March 27 inquiry from Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, Jim Williams, commissioner of GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service, said that in two or three telephone calls with GSA Administrator Lurita Doan in August, “I believe I informed the administrator of the alleged violations by Sun.”
Williams said he told Doan that the president of Sun’s federal division had acknowledged the problems and believed he had resolved them. “Possibly in the same or a later call, the administrator and I did talk about the importance of trying to keep Sun from leaving the GSA schedule program,” Williams wrote. ~snip~
Williams’ letter appears to contradict a March 13 letter that Doan sent to Grassley in response to a prior inquiry. ~snip~
