Imus Creates Firestorm With Rutgers Comments (nappy-headed hos)
Source: WNBC

Don Imus is creating controversy again.

On his "Imus In The Morning" show Thursday, he referred to the Rutgers women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos."

He was talking to Sid Rosenberg with Sports Talk on the phone about the Women's NCAA Championship game.

Imus started out talking about the Rutgers team as, "some rough girls from Rutgers. They got tattoos," and then went on to call them "some nappy-headed hos."

There's a double-standard in broadcasting. A lesser known name could have their a** canned for this kind of racist crap. IMHO there should be firings or suspensions for all these big name broadcasters when they spew this racist or homophobic crap.

4. How does anyone watch him?
Maybe he should get with Coulter to compare notes on how to be the biggest a**hole around.

When I first got interested in politics I checked out his show. It didn't take long to figure out he is a egomaniac blowhard imo. MSNBC could surely find someone else to fill his time slot.

A craggy old man with perfectly coiffed hair under a cowboy hat. Who in hell has he been fooling all these years? :eyes:

10. Imus Apologizes for Rutgers Remark
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D8OBBKT80&show_article=1

Radio host Don Imus apologized Friday for calling the Rutgers University women's basketball team "nappy headed hos" on his nationally syndicated program.

The National Association of Black Journalists demanded his immediate firing after the man known as "Imus in the Morning" put his foot deep in his mouth Wednesday. Imus questioned the players' looks, describing them as tattooed "rough girls." His producer compared the team—which has eight black members—to the NBA's Toronto Raptors.

Near the start of Friday's show, Imus said he wanted to "apologize for an insensitive and ill-conceived remark we made the other morning referring to the Rutgers women's basketball team."

"It was completely inappropriate, and we can understand why people were offended. Our characterization was thoughtless and stupid, and we are sorry."

Gregory Lee, an NABJ officer and senior assistant sports editor at The Boston Globe, said the mea culpa did little to atone for the comments.

14. It's not enough. We are looking at another Trent Lott moment here.
I don't think it will be "business as usual" for Imus; this is one that people will not accept, and his initial dismissal of it as simply an "idiot comment meant to be funny" only compounded the harm. Calling women collegiate basketball players in a national championship game "nappy headed hos" is just about as far beyond the pale as you can get. This one isn't going away. I don't know if he will be taken off the air permanently, but I bet he goes on "hiatus," and is cancelled by many stations.

By the way, what a rotten thing to do to a team that fought its way to the finals, and will now be remembered not for their season, but for some rich blowhard's characterization of them as "nappy headed hos." Unforgivable.

11. I was having my first cup of coffee and turned on the teevee
just in time to hear some bizarre character announcing that he wanted to "get some stinky on my hangdown." WTF. I watched long enough to determine that it was Imus's show and that the characterization was of Clinton - some charming skit about how Bill wanted us to elected Hill because otherwise he would not be getting any stinky on his hangdown. Cute. Charming. Conservative.

12. I think Imus is one alcoholic who should never have given up drinking
at least he would have an excuse for being such a foul-mouthed, mean-spirited pig. I can't believe people actually watch him or, worse yet, go on his show to appeal to his listeners.

Networks Condemn Remarks by Imus

-snip-

MSNBC, which simulcasts Mr. Imus’s show on cable television, issued an apology, noting that the program is not a production of the network; NBC, its parent company, called the comments “deplorable.”

CBS Radio, which syndicates the radio show, was sorry as well: “We are disappointed by Imus’s actions earlier this week which we find completely inappropriate,” the company said in a statement. “We fully agree that a sincere apology was called for and will continue to monitor the program’s content going forward.”

-snip-

But even with Mr. Imus’s success, his comments gave NBC executives pause. “We take this matter very seriously,” said Allison Gollust, senior vice president for news communications at NBC. “We find the comments to be deplorable, and we are continuing to review the situation.”

-snip-

But for Bryan Monroe, the president of the National Association of Black Journalists and the editor of Ebony and Jet magazines, Mr. Imus’s apology was not enough and called on journalists to boycott the show. “It was stunning, insulting and unbelievable that he went there,” Mr. Monroe said. “But his apology was too little, too late. No matter how contrite, his words hurt so many so deeply that after 40 years in the radio business, it is time for him to go.”

For the time being, though, the apology seemed to be sufficient.

Sufficient to whom, I wonder?

23. No this one is not going to quietly fade away
"I accept his apology, just as I want his bosses to accept his resignation," said the Rev. Al Sharpton. He promised to picket Imus' New York radio home, WFAN-AM, unless the veteran of nearly 40 years of anything-goes broadcasting is gone within a week.

Sharpton was not alone in his anger over Imus' description of the Rutgers' women as "nappy headed hos" during a Wednesday morning segment of his show, which airs for millions of listeners on more than 70 stations and the MSNBC television network.

On Friday, after Imus delivered an on-air apology, both WFAN and MSNBC condemned his remarks. WFAN issued a statement promising to "monitor the program's content" but Imus, a member of the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame, was not publicly disciplined.

The National Association of Black Journalists, the editor-in-chief of Essence magazine and a New York sports columnist joined the chorus against Imus.

"What he has said has deeply hurt too many people black and white, male and female," said NABJ President Bryan Monroe. "His so-called apology comes two days after the fact, and it is too little, too late."
