Pelosi says White House singling out her trip to Syria
Source: AP

BEIRUT, Lebanon- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday shrugged off White House criticism of her upcoming trip to Damascus, saying she had "great hope" for reviving U.S. relations with Syria and changing its behavior.

Speaking hours after arriving in Lebanon, Pelosi indicated the Bush administration was singling out her trip to Syria, but ignoring the recent visits by Republican members of Congress.

"It's interesting because three of our colleagues, who are all Republicans, were in Syria yesterday and I didn't hear the White House speaking out about that," Pelosi said, referring to the Sunday meeting of Reps. Frank Wolf, Joe Pitts and Robert Aderholt with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus.

"I think that it was an excellent idea for them to go," said Pelosi, who is to meet Syrian leaders Wednesday. "And I think it's an excellent idea for us to go, as well."

1. Yeah, some GOP strategist/asshat on CNN this morning ...
...actually had the stones to say "its not her place..." to be meeting with hostile countries blah blah ... and I immediately thought he was trying to insinuate that "a woman's place is in the kitchen".

 GRRRRRR. Go git 'em Madam Speaker!!! :patriot:

4. But what is so irritating...
...is that our "journalists" never, ever bring up the fact that three Republicans went to Syria last week to talk to their president -- so why is it less her place, as the House Majority Leader, than it is theirs, as representatives of the minority party???

Gack.

9. They do, just not often.
As one pundit put it, it shows that Democrats don't have a monopoly on fool's errands. He had no use for either. I fully expect Pelosi to come back and try to introduce a treaty to Congress, calling it the restoration of the true Constitution; in other words, neither should go unless it has a fairly direct connection to legislation pending or being written.

Having repubs dis repubs doesn't make a splash here unless it's a repub dissing a repub that we especially like to disrespect: then it's rooting for the enemy of our enemy. That's also not likely, I suspect, to show up much at FR, simply because they probably like repubs dissing repubs about as much as we like dems dissing dems.

Now repubs dissing dems ... *that's* a big deal, and gets a sharply negative reaction here. We relish the idea of dems dissing repubs.

Even the MSM rather likes the idea of repubs dissing * (enemy of my enemy, for most reporters). And they rather like the spectacle of the WH engaging in partisan politics by dissing Pelosi.

17. Actually, someone asked at the State Department today.
Whoever it was (I forget) pointed out that Republicans had been to Syria in the recent past and asked what sort of briefing the State Department provided.

And I think someone also pointed out the GOP trips to Dana Perino at the White House, too.

So some of them do ask. It's just that it doesn't make the front page of the New York Post.

22. Oh yeah! How dare we 'little women?'
Especially since the MEN have been doing such a fabulous job! :sarcasm: You can't count that big boo-boo face Condi as a diplomat, either. We've seen her achieve NO diplomatic successes so far. She's only a bootlicker of * but with a face like that?! Who the heck wants to bargain with that gremlin? She's just as scary when she 'smiles' too.

I think gracious Nancy will do well and that is what is pissing off Lord Pissy Pants the most!

7. Isn't it a big no-no to criticize someone out of the country?
I seem to recall that the Republicans were all whiny and had their panties in a bunch whenever one of theirs was criticized while out of the country. Apparently, it's okay to do that again, at least until another Republican can find a country that will accept a visit from one of their criminal cohort.

13. She should have gone to Iran, as well.
That would have really given the Rethugs something to carp about. Most Rethugs are arrogant, hypocrits, and assholes. The US Corp Media are mostly whores of the Busholini Regime.

14. Heaven forbid that
the third most important person in the government be well versed in foreign affairs and diplomacy. Wouldn't want that. Better that they all stay stupid and ill informed - just like the current occupant of the Oval Office.

16. Somehow we must break the NeoNaziCons' blockade preventing talk with Syria, Iran, and others.
If the NeoNaziCons don't agree with dipolomacy and U.S. national interests, then they are traitors seeking to destroy the nation by hijacking it into isolation and wars contravening its national interest.

21. Pelosi is taking neocon ultra-Zionist extraordinaire Tom Lantos with her to Syria
CNN showed video of Lantos sitting to Pelosi's left at a meeting with Syrian officials. Lantos' presence should provide Pelosi plenty of cover from Bush's idiotic attacks.
