GOP Fundraising Numbers Hit New Highs (Romney $23M, Giuliani $15M)

WASHINGTON -- Republicans Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani joined the Democratic presidential candidates in reporting unprecedented fundraising numbers on Monday, with Romney declaring he raised $23 million during the first quarter, and Giuliani saying his donations totaled $15 million.

Both numbers blew away prior GOP presidential fundraising standards, while Romney's figure put the former Massachusetts governor in competition with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., who on Sunday reported raising $26 million between Jan. 1 and March 31.

Aides to Giuliani, the former New York mayor, said he raised more than $10 million in money for the primary during March alone.

Giuliani said he has raised nearly $17 million since he formed his presidential exploratory committee in November and had $11 million cash on hand as of Saturday, most of which is money intended for the primary fight.

2. What is the current market value of the presidency?
I seem to recall the cost of purchasing the presidency in the last election cycle as being $100,000,000 and a senate seat $30 or $40 million. With the election this far off and these kind of figures already reached it appears those prices will go up drastically. This of course is chicken feed compared to the price we are all paying in terms of our democracy and quality of life and the financial returns the backers of these candidates will see.

4. McCain trails Romney, Giuliani in fundraising
Source: The Arizona Republic

Apr. 2, 2007 12:29 PM

Sen. John McCain today announced a disappointing $12.5 million fundraising total for the first three months of 2007.

The total, which would have been impressive in past election cycles, finds McCain trailing GOP rivals Mitt Romney and Rudolph Giuliani in the crucial early money sweepstakes.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who has struggled in the national polls, reported $23 million in primary election contributions, including more than $2 million of his own money. The Federal Election Commission allows candidates to collect money for their primary and general election campaigns simultaneously. advertisement

Giuliani, the Republican frontrunner in national surveys, took in more than $15 million in primary cash, including more than $10 million last month. He also transferred about $2 million from another campaign account for a total of $17 million.

5. Good
I hope McCain goes down hard and has to live with the fact that not only did he lose, but he betrayed everything he stood for in 2000. Nothing hurts worse than capping off a long political career as a losing sell-out whore.

6. Where does Romney keep getting all this cash?
He's at 3% in the polls and is trounced in all the head-to-head matchups. I don't get where his revenue keeps coming from - who are his supporters?

9. NPR reported this yesterday a.m. on the Democreats...
Edited on Tue Apr-03-07 07:19 AM by LeftHander
At the time the REPUBLICANS had not divulged any amounts. Yet as seen here, the mainstream would not report until the Repukes could get the headline.

I saw this yesterday afternoon, and barfed. NPR reported on the Republican fundraising this morning.

10. Does it strike anyone else as funny....?
That the candidates who will not carry the conservative base (anti-gay, anti-choice.....) are the ones making the money?

This worries me a bit for '08, especially if the Democrats nominate someone who is as divisive as George W. Bush.
