Largest Paper in CT, Murdoch Owned, Calls on GOP Governor to Resign
Edited on Sat Dec-20-03 10:15 PM by zls44
The snowball gets bigger...and bigger...and bigger...a MURDOCH paper, who LOVED him...now wants him out!

-snip-

HARTFORD, Conn. - Connecticut's largest newspaper called on Gov. John G. Rowland to resign in an editorial prepared for Sunday's edition, saying a corruption investigation and his "repeated deceptions" over accepting gifts from friends and contractors are hurting state government.

A week after warning Rowland he had just one more chance to come clean, The Hartford Courant wrote, "Enough of this gubernatorial nonsense. The way to end this sad spectacle is for the governor to resign.

"His repeated deceptions as well as the wide-ranging federal investigation of alleged corruption in his administration have had a debilitating effect on state government," the newspaper said.

<...>

The Courant joined the Journal-Inquirer of Manchester, The Day of New London and The Herald of New Britain in calling for the governor's resignation. Other newspapers have suggested he step aside while an investigation is conducted.

Democratic lawmakers have called for Rowland's resignation, and some Republicans are increasing pressure on him as well.

Connecticut's Republican members of Congress — Reps. Christopher Shays, Nancy Johnson and Rob Simmons — want to meet with him to discuss his political future. "I don't know how he can continue to stay in office," Shays said Friday.

Those paying for or performing work on Rowland's cottage included employees of the Tomasso Group, a contractor with over $100 million in state projects.

I know there's no editorials in LBN...but this one is kinda surreal.

1. That's good.
Now if they would just look at the BUSH ADMINISTRATION with one percent of the objectivity they are applying to Rowland I could be happy.

2. Thank you Hartford Courant
Its amazing how tone deaf Rowland is to all this, he really does not get how much trouble he is in. The only good thing from all this is that the longer he holds on, the more it splashes all over the rest of the Republican thgs in CT.

3. So now the GOP takes orders from the newspaper czar?
We know who is running the country now, don't we?

I hope Rowland tell 'em to get fucked!

13. Whom are you referring too?
Murdoch or Rowland - I want neither to hang around, especially Murdoch. He's a bigger problem than Rowland.

5. Actually not a Murdoch property
The Courant is owned by Chicago Tribune Co., and formerly by the LA Times

9. And I believe it's the oldest extant newspaper in the US
Seem to remember picking that up somewhere. Only one dating from Revolutionary War times or before that's still in print. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong about this...?

6. Rowland was my governor until I moved to AZ
And he screwed up the state since day 1. I worked for Curry trying to get him booted out in 2002. Well, it's sad that no one really payed attention to his slimy side until after the election.

7. Sorry, but that's just wrong
God told Rowland He wanted him to stay Gov. I don't support Rowland, but Rowland said God told him this and nobody would ever lie about something like that. So he has to stay in office. It sucks, because Rowland is such an obvious corrupt scoundrel. But there it is. God has spoken; whattya gonna do?

10. She said
Basically, how dare the Courant invesitgate corruption.

-snip-

Last week, Mr. Rowland wrapped himself in Old Glory, made biblical references about human frailty and cheered his wife as she, too, humiliated herself by reciting her homemade version of the classic "A Visit From St. Nicholas." She joined the governor in blaming the news media - The Courant in particular - for the trouble Mr. Rowland finds himself in. When all else fails, blame the journalists. That has been the Rowland way.

It's the longest continuously published newspaper in the US, not the oldest.

Haven't missed a scheduled issue since 1837. When the Brits burned down the press when it was a weekly (1764-1837), they printed it on wrapping paper. Since 1837, every day, non stop.

11. I want Rowland to stay in office. No, I am not God.
I want Rowland to stay in office as the poster child of the republican party. I want him likened to Bush and Cheney. I want a group of republicans to support Rowland for the 2008 republican presidential nomination. I want him to drag Shays, Johnson, and Simmons down to defeat in 2004.

Democrats should defend him by saying: "Why should Rowland resign when Cheney hasn't?" "Why should Rowland resign when he is such a close, personal friend and ideological twin of Bush?" "Why should Rowland resign for corruption when Tom DeLay and Denny Hastert haven't?" "Why should Rowland resign when nothing says republican like corruption approved by God?"
