Report: Gov. Gibbons aided wife's client

WASHINGTON - A defense company that got a federal contract with help from then-Republican Rep. Jim Gibbons, now governor of Nevada, hired Gibbons' wife to do consulting work, according to a published report Friday.

Dawn Gibbons was paid about $35,000 by Sierra Nevada Corp. of Sparks, Nev., in 2004, the same year her husband, who sat on the Armed Services and Intelligence committees, pushed for the company to get a $4 million contract to make a helicopter radar system, the Wall Street Journal reported.

An attorney for Jim Gibbons, who was elected governor last November, didn't immediately return a message left at his office Friday. Dawn Gibbons couldn't immediately be reached for comment Friday. The Gibbons' have denied wrongdoing.

The new report comes amid ongoing federal scrutiny of Jim Gibbons' business dealings. Federal law enforcement officials said last month that the FBI is investigating Gibbons' failure to properly report gifts or payments from a software company that was awarded secret military contracts when he was in Congress.

Governor says FBI has not contacted him and newspaper story "is full of lies"

Governor's wife says allegations reported in Wall Street Journal are unbelievable

CARSON CITY -- The FBI is investigating allegations Gov. Jim Gibbons accepted unreported payments or gifts from a friend whose Reno software company Gibbons helped land secret military contracts while he was in Congress, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Gibbons denied the accusations on Thursday, saying he never accepted money beyond campaign contributions from businessman Warren Trepp, a longtime friend and owner of Reno-based eTreppid Technologies LLC. The newly elected governor also questioned the article's assertion that the FBI is investigating the matter.

"The story in The Wall Street Journal is full of lies, and I'd like them to retract it," Gibbons said during an interview with reporters in his Carson City office.

Montgomery, who is suing over alleged copyright violations related to software eTreppid sold to the military, also charges that Gibbons "instituted" an illegal raid on Montgomery's home on behalf of Trepp through calls to the FBI and U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden.

Gibbons said Thursday that he doesn't know Bogden.

Bogden, who said he met Gibbons once, denied having anything to do with a raid on Montgomery's home.

DEFENSE CONTRACTORS: Gibbons faces new questions
Report: Then-congressman aided firm that hired wife

The scandal involving Gov. Jim Gibbons' ties to defense contractors broadened Friday with revelations that his wife was paid consulting fees by a company he helped to obtain federal contracts while in Congress.

(snip)

A Washington, D.C., federal grand jury is issuing subpoenas in the eTreppid investigation - The issuing of subpoenas signifies that the Gibbons investigation is proceeding and evidence is being collected and preserved for a possible criminal case, experts on federal criminal law said.
(snip)

"I'd be surprised if Jim Gibbons doesn't find himself indicted," Sloan said. "These excuses that they're trying to give, that they're friends (with the owners of eTreppid and Sierra Nevada), are not likely to wash with a federal prosecutor."

The Nevada Republican Governer was formerly a US Congressman with strong ties to the Bush Administration. Having only been in office a very short time, there has already been 3 investigations and calls from the local news media (Democrat & Republican) for a recall which can only be done after he has been in office for 6 months. His behavior & conduct almost mimmic our President, Tom DeLay and the Rove Republican plan of illegal/unreported financing & no bid contracts with kickbacks from the contractors - In my opinon, this is why the Nevada US Attorney was fired...
