Ecuador protests to Colombia over border incident

Ecuador protested to Colombia on Thursday over a week-long incident in which some Colombian troops entered Ecuadorian territories and killed two people near the Amazon town of Puerto Nuevo.

"Colombia did not fulfill the security procedures (set out) in a Jan. 2006 agreement between defense ministers to avoid military operations in sensitive border areas," Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa told a press conference after the ministry sent a diplomatic note to Colombia.

Ecuador said that 15 Colombian soldiers crossed the border to kill Jorge Plaza Mantilla, 24, of Ecuadorian-Colombian origin, and Colombian David Marroquin Ortega, 36.

Espinosa said that Ecuador had enough evidence to send this protest note to seek to pressure Colombia into recognizing the incident and promising to fulfill agreements and respect Ecuador's national sovereignty.
