Leahy pushes prosecutor case

March 26, 2007

By David Gram Associated Press

MONTPELIER — Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., on Sunday vowed to continue to push to have top White House officials testify publicly and under oath about their role in the firings of eight federal prosecutors.

"If you destroy the integrity of the prosecutorial system, you hurt everybody all the way down to the cop on the beat, because the investigators are going to ask, 'Should I really look at this case? Is it politically allowable to go after this person because they're a Republican or this person because they're a Democrat?'," Leahy said.

Appearing on CBS' "Face the Nation," the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee spoke of the panel's plan to have Kyle Sampson, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' recently fired chief of staff, testify this week about the dismissals late last year of the eight prosecutors.

He said the political landscape in Washington had changed since Democrats assumed control of Congress following the November elections.

"Our founders devised this system of checks and balances. This administration's been used to going unchecked. The balances kicked in last November and they're going to have to deal with that reality," he said.

2. I think their starting position is, 'Democrats do it anyway so let's do it better'
I've had it with that attitude. I don't want either side to corrupt the system. But these Republicans have gone so far that something ought to be done. I hope Leahy succeeds rather than allows the issue to die quietly. He certainly seems to intend as much.

3. Only In Their Diseased, Atrophied Minds Did Democrats Do This
GOP paranoia is no reason to break every law in the book and trash the Constitution.

4. I agree, paranoia's no excuse.
I just felt like saying it because well, it occurs to me pretty much every time I read Josh Marshall write about this. Like about, you're not supposed to use the IRS on political opponents. Yeah well, they argued that the Clinton admin did just that, didn't they? And that excuses "similar" acts of their own. I'd love for government to just get cleaned up but, I wonder if that's a vain hope.
