Audit shows Oliphant left office $427,515 short

Miriam Oliphant left Broward's elections office struggling with a $427,515 shortfall and 16 vacant jobs when she was suspended by Gov. Jeb Bush one month ago, according to a county audit.

Oliphant's replacement, former educator Brenda Snipes, called for the review by County Auditor Evan Lukic.

The audit says the county approved 69 full-time election jobs but only 53 were filled as of November. In the weeks before Oliphant was suspended, she fired the chief financial officer, the registration and absentee voting director, and the poll worker coordinator. She also dismissed a clerk who told state investigators about uncounted absentee ballots that were discarded in a cabinet last year.
