GOP source: Gonzales 'made no friends with Republicans'
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Senate Republican leadership said in a meeting Tuesday, that though U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales "bungled" the response to criticism of seven fired U.S. attorneys, he did nothing wrong and should not be dismissed, according to two Republican sources at the meeting.

One source said that while Gonzales is very close to President Bush, he has "made no friends with Republicans" on the Hill and has "no good will here."

But "our guys work on principle" and "they don't see this as enough to get him out," one of the sources said.

"What they've done and how they've handled this is stupid," the same source said. "But not, 'Oh God, we gotta get this guy out of here.'"

...

But Oregon Sen. Gordon Smith said many senators are reluctant to call for Gonzales' firing publicly but have started saying privately in the cloakroom that it's time for him to go. "Many senators; they feel personally aggrieved by this."

1. Tuesday: Blah blah blah... Wednesday: Blah blah blah... Thursday: Blah blah blah... Friday:
Gonzales abruptly resigns, citing his desire to spend more time with his family.

I don't see how they can defend this
this is another attempt by Bush to increase his power, this would reach into all 50 states,
attorneys nomimated w/o congressional oversight in direct bypass of the constitution. Don't
they care about the rule of law, or is an all powerful executive okay as long as there is
an (R) after his name?

8. You got it.
That's the way it's always been. When they break the rules, it's not really because they broke the rules, it's because they're being persecuted or having their actions misinterpreted. When a Dem falls short ethically, it's a sign of our "moral weakness" and the media goes nuts. Remember, if you wrap yourself in the flag, you can justify anything.

10. Yes, remember the 2000 election
can you imagine what would have happened if Gore had been the plaintiff who brought
the case before the Supreme Court.

7. How do they know there was no wrongdoing?
That's what gets me, is how the Rs have no qualms about proclaiming something about which they have no facts. It's symptomatic, really, of their whole party.

An investigation just tries to ferret out the facts -- surely that should be to everyone's advantage?
