U.S. attorney candidate can't practice law

By Mike Carter Saturday, March 17, 2007
Seattle Times staff reporter

Former Republican congressman Rick White, one of three candidates the Republicans have submitted to replace John McKay as U.S. attorney for Western Washington, cannot practice law in the state.

White's license was suspended by the state Supreme Court in August 2003 for failure to pay his bar dues. He was reinstated to the bar in 2005 after paying a small fee, but currently holds an "inactive" status.

White said late Friday that he was working toward reactivating his status as an attorney in the state of Washington. He said he needs to complete about "20 to 30 hours" of Continuing Legal Education (CLE) before he can reclaim his license.

"I understand I'm in a bad position," he said.

And so it goes, the Administration removes talented and competent professionals and tries to replace them with un-qualified cronies. This drowning of the govt. is all part of a 6 year tradition.

Wow he must be an incredible business man also. :sarcasm: He can't even manage to keep his license in force. Probably spending it at the local bar. A real freakin winner....but all I guess he needs to do is say yes, being a real lawyer doesn't seem to matter. Look at Gonzales, we have an Attorney General who never prosecuted a case in his life. Hellava job Brownie...

4. He has been out of office since 1998 and he didn't have time
to keep his license active? And since his defeat he was involved in a lobbying group?

8. My license to practice law is the most important thing
I have career-wise. It's $300 a year. They send you a notice and warn you of what will happen if you don't re-up. I wonder if one of his CLE courses will be Professional Ethics!

9. In Oregon, lawyers are required to have six hours of ethics training
I think Washington's requirements are similar. Picking up 30 hours of CLE credits is pretty easy, and this guy could have his bar ticket reactivated by next weekend. But I wouldn't consult him on a routine legal matter if I knew this about his license. And I sure as the world wouldn't think him qualified for such a high level position as United States Attorney.

Just another fuck-up to add to an already enormous pile constructed by this fuck-up of an administration. Who will even notice?

10. Amen!
Totally agree ~~ all we have to do is pay our bar dues in order to avoid this problem. Ummmmmm...that is NOT a lot to ask.

I am retired now ~~ but when I practiced, that bill came in? It got paid immeidately and NOT at the last minute. So, I know exactly how you feel.

13. A friend of mine does free legal services here in Chicago.
He's a trained and licensed lawyer. He doesn't even work in that field to earn a living. He has another business for that. He performs legal services for the poorest of the poor, free of charge. He told me he has to make sure his license is always current, as well as his malpractice insurance.

11. He probably spent more than that on donations to Republicans
Apparently the ROV is much greater with donations to the GOP.
