BAGHDAD: Three U.S. soldiers were killed Wednesday following roadside bombs and small-arms fire in Diyala province, the military said.

The statement did not give details about the attacks, which occurred a day after some 700 American troops rolled into the volatile area to help tame the violence that has been rising there as Sunni Arab insurgents fled to the region ahead of a security crackdown in Baghdad.

Two Task Force Lightning soldiers died of injuries sustained from explosions near their vehicles in separate attacks, the military said in a statement. Another soldier died of injuries sustained from small arms fire, the statement said, adding that nine others were wounded.

The military also said a U.S. Marine assigned to Multinational Forces-West was killed Tuesday during combat operations in the Sunni insurgent stronghold of Anbar province west of Baghdad.

BAGHDAD (CNN) -- The U.S. military reported the deaths of five U.S. troops on Wednesday, all in two restive provinces outside Baghdad -- the ethnically mixed Diyala province and the Sunni-dominated Anbar province.

A soldier assigned to Multi National Force-West died during combat in Anbar province, the military said on Thursday. This is where U.S. Marines and soldiers and Iraqi troops have been fighting insurgents up and down the Euphrates River valley for years.

A Marine in Anbar assigned to Multi National Force-West also died "in a noncombat related incident."

In Diyala, two soldiers died as a result of separate roadside bombings while they were conducting combat operations, and a third died from small arms fire, the military said on Wednesday. All three soldiers were assigned to the Army's Task Force Lightning. Nine soldiers were wounded.

Don't they know they're supposed to be in Baghdad, facing down the surge of the American wehrmacht? Why are they killing our guys out in the hinterlands, where they don't have quite so much support? What's the matter with those insurgents anyway? They're supposed to stay in Baghdad and get surged, dammit!
