ANCHORENA PARK, Uruguay - President Bush said the FBI has addressed the problems that led to illegal prying into personal information on people in the U.S., but "there's more work to be done."

"My question is, `What are you going to do solve the problem and how fast can you get it solved?'" the president said.

He expressed confidence in FBI Director Robert Mueller and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. "Those problems will be addressed as quickly as possible," Bush said.

The president noted that while the inspector general's report "justly made issue of FBI shortfalls, (it) also made clear that these letters were important to the security of the United States."

The report found that FBI agents or lawyers improperly used the letters, administrative subpoenas allowed under the USA Patriot Act, to ask businesses to turn over personal data on customers.

March 10 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush said the FBI is addressing privacy violations uncovered in an inspector general's report and expressed continued confidence in the head of the bureau and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Bush said he was briefed last week by Gonzales and Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Robert Mueller on the audit, which found the agency illegally collected telephone and banking records, e-mail and other data under provisions of a law enacted to fight terrorism.

``I was pleased by director Mueller's answer that he had already begun to address some of the problems, but there was more work to be done,'' Bush said today at a news conference in Anchorena Park, Uruguay, during the second stop on his five- country visit to Latin America.

The report by the Justice Department's inspector general, released yesterday, concluded that the mistakes in using so- called national security letters to collect data were the result of errors by agents, poor record-keeping and confusion about the process for properly getting access to the information.

Well, that's a relief! I was afraid this was just going to get swept under the carpet and never mentioned again.

Please, what manner of shit be this? When just a few of the details of this horrible idea were made public, millions of people rightly predicted these very problems. For our prescience, we were called Bush haters, we were told that we didn't understand the nature of the struggle, or that we were low-down terrorist sympathizers, and that never, ever in a billion years would this power be misused.

Well, we were right. Again. And a crime has been committed by this administration. Again. And the administration would greatly prefer it if everyone just calmed down and didn't make such a big stink about its lawlessness. Again. Will the major media go back to their snooze? Probably. So whose job will it be -- again -- to keep this going?
